Two goal scoring landmarks
« on November 21, 2010, 07:54:30 pm by Dutch Uncle »
As remarked before, James Hayter's goal yesterday meant he has scored in 5 consecutive league matches - a feat only achieved 25 times in Rovers' entire history. The last occasion was of course Billy last year who went on to score in 6 consecutive league matches (the 12th time that has happened in Rovers' history), but the previous occasion before that was as far back as Ian Nimmo in 1980-81.

It was also James' 30th competitive goal for the club (league plus cups plus THAT goal). Copps has 32 so we now have two players at the club with 30+ goals for the first time since 2008 (Paul Heffernan and Paul Green), and prior to that 2003 (Paul Barnes plus Jamie Paterson), and then prior to that all the way back to 1984-5. Note Greg Blundell and Michael McIndoe also scored more than 30 for the club but Greg left before Macca reached 30, and he left before Heffernan or Green made it.

Billy Sharp on 21 may well reach 30 this season. If so, and assuming no departures,  this would be the first time the club would have three current players over 30 goals since 1984-5 (Glynn Snodin, Colin Douglas and Steve Lister) - in fact this has only happened 8 times in our entire league history (goalscorers have had a tendency to move on or be sold). All this is more evidence that thanks to JR we are no longer a selling club and our better players are staying longer.

Bumped into Hayts (not literally) this morning as I was filling up my motor at the Tesco Express station at the top of Stoops Lane. Congratulated him on yet another headed goal.

I asked him if he has a ball magnet in his swede.

He chuckled and said 'Yeah I must have'

Out? What's that?

Is it a term in cricket, or what never happens to a football in Reading?

Dutch - was Alan Warboys still around in 84/85 or had he finished by then?  Any idea on his total from his two spells?

Hi Woking

Warboys scored 36 goals in his two spells with us, and left during the 1981-2 season.

Cheers

And further to that point, what's our longest scoring streak in the second tier? Surely we must've beaten it?

Every club is a selling club and every player has his price.

Man Utd are a selling club,Arsenal are a selling club,Liverpool are a selling club,Stoke are a selling club,Inter are a selling club and so are Doncaster Rovers.
If the right price comes along then we are a selling club.

Not by a long chalk Mike. There were far more goals per match being scored in the 1950's so it is not surprising we had longer runs of consecutive matches in which we scored. The best is 20 matches stretching from the last 8 matches of 1952-3 into the first 12 matches of 1953-4. We also scored in all of the first 18 matches of 1956-7. We even had a run of 10 consecutive matches scoring in 1957-8 - a season in which we were relegated.

By the way we also scored in 10 matches in a row 2 seasons ago.

Still you never know how long the current run will extend.........

P.S. Eastender - being the first championship team this year to score in 10 consecutive fixtures has been mentioned a lot on here - I was looking more at our own club records

PPS: The longest sequence of scoring in league matches in the club's history is 27 in 1934-5 in Div 3 North (28 if an abandoned match is also included)

Cheers - and I'm still looking for a good night out

We are not a selling club, a selling club is if your LOOKING to sell players. Obviously if the right offer came in for a player then we would more than likely sell but we're not looking to sell that player.
