Hello and a couple of questions
« on November 21, 2010, 04:25:15 pm by ninja67 »
Dave Penny is being lined up for Mansfield Town manager? Thoughts please

Our Chairman John Radford wants us to do a Doncaster Rovers, Just how difficult is it?

Oh just to add, Donny Fans raised money for my daughter a few years ago, Chelsea is blind and had suffered from eye cancer. Many thanks again

I was at that match when we were helping raise money for Chelsea I hope she is doing OK. With regards to Dave Penny he is a decent manager and is a very nice chap as well.
He will need time he was doing a good job at Oldham saved them from relegation and his thanks was to be sacked. Hope your lot treat him better.

Be prepared to sign Greg Blundell, Tim Ryan, Foster, Lewis Guy in the future months. He should do you a decent job if given lots of money. Oldham fans are glad he left as the football he delivered was garbage. Like most managers needs a bit of luck and time

Think they already have Steve Foster, been sent off a time or two as well.

I think that is being very unfair, i think you will find he had a budget and worked within it.

Ninja, as with all managers if he is given the time and some resources to work with DP will be good for you.

I remember Chelsea, if my memory serves me well you brought her to belle vue that match?

For me, Dave Penney was an average manager, but at the time we would have taken a stuffed dog as our manager due to the circumstances, as long as it didn't have Richardsons lead attached to it!

I could take or leave Penney, sometimes the football was good, but I'm judging that against the crap that we had to endure previously. We signed some decent players and a lot of donkeys. Between him and our current manager there is no comparison.

The thing that made me kind of dislike him was a when, at a match, some supporters heckled him - \"Come on Penney, get Ravenhill on\" on one particular occasion. His response was to turn round and shout (in front of the crowd, including some kiddies) \"shut the f*%k up you w*nk*rs!\" I didn't like that at all. He was also, alleged to have been invloved in a \"I'm the manager and I'll punch you in the face if I want\" brawl on a rovers away trip, which apparently led to the \"moving on\" of some of our first team.
When you're looking back at the performance of Rovers under Penney, don't forget that we have a fantastic chairman and I'm sure he had a massive part to play in those days. I'm not rubbishing Dave, but it's sometimes easy to look good when you're driving a ferrari in a mini metro race ...if that makes sense?
Good luck to you anyway.

\"To be fair\" (his favourite saying) he did put together a good squad. A staunch advocate of 4 4 2 he put together a string of results that may remain unequalled when we achieved the back to back promotions. We will always be thankful for the job he did.

However, struggled when it came to a plan B and getting the best from all of his players. Often preferred to play experienced centre backs and full back rather than play a less experienced full back.

Very true, which is where I think a certain chairman deserves a lot of praise for \"assembling\" that squad.

I rated Penney as Rover's manager and didn't want him to leave, but reflecting on his time here, the money available to him for players gave him quite an advantage over other managers when we were in the Conference. I don't think it's exaggerating to say Rovers were the Man Utd of the non-league.
On our arrival back into the football league we were still a relatively wealthy club compared to many of our opponents, and a couple of shrewd signings won us the league.
Penney was a successful manager but I'm not sure how much credit John Ryan could take for it, considering his influence in bringing good players to the club.

I'll never forgive DP for getting rid of The Sarge and replacing him with Nick Fenton .

I wouldnt wish Fenton on anyone, other than where he currently is of course.

Penney dropped 'lucky' with having Green and Ravenhill come through from the juniors at roughly the same time and they were the core of our team at that time.

He knows what it takes to get out of the Conference, though and Div 2 should present no problems, although he did struggle with a Darlington side that was already, arguably, on the slide.

A good lower league manager and although that sounds a bit arrogant it isn't meant to be. IMO, he has his limitations and he was right to leave us when he did. (JR knew we needed something more, at that time, and now we have it).

DP did a great job for Rovers and brought in two players who are arguably the best we have in our current team. He is his own man and the beginning of the end here was when he refused to kowtow when the club had set up a deal with TV to feature the battle of the Vikings ( against Villa) . He failed to pick our Danish Viking goalie for the game . Shortly after his assistant was sacked ... and suddenly it was judged he had taken us as far as he could .
As it happens we now have one of the best managers we have ever had but DP did a wonderful job for us and if you do not mind a guy who is not a shrinking violet ...

Wasn't it a whole season after the Budtz/Sorenson thing? And Ravenhill was a Penney signing from Barnsley, he didn't come from the youth team.

I liked Dave Penney, his team really knew how to mix it and how to fight for (with) each other. He's stubborn, but the spirit in the team that won the 3rd division title turned over Villa, Man City and very nearly Arsenal.

In my eyes he's a very good manager for that level although he needs success at another club soon I fear before he unfairly gets labelled a one club wonder. (For how close he came at Darlo their recent plight and signings at the time would suggest they way overspent).

A very \"meat & two veg\" style manager. 442, big centre backs, bit of bite and energy in the middle, flying wingers and big man/small man up front. Was surprised he didn't get the York job when that came up but hopefully he can get you guys ready for a promotion push.

I always enjoyed the games when penny was in charge. Not as much passing ability or style and technique as the current side but we do of course have far better players now. I always felt like id see plenty of goals and attacking intent and he certainly got a staunch defence together. Looking back now i do feel like we were very one-dimensional and often resorted to long balls to big leo but we did get some very decent players to the club and his success with us speaks for itself.

Eyup Neil, how's the young Miss Barsby?

DP should do a good job for you. He walked on water for much of his time here.

Think you will find that his style of football was very strange, infact im not sure he had a style at all sometimes he would get the team to kick and rush some time we would get it on the deck, good manager nice guy.
He should have what it takes to do a good job for mansfield

Best of Luck mate.   :)

Thanx guys for all your replies :cheer:  Firstly Chelsea is doing ok, she is now 13!! She has had some scares with other illness and had many  MRI scans and tests on her brain. Still under hospitals but we just carry on! We still have the Doncaster Rovers shirt and photos!

Penny has been at our ground for the last couple of games.I would like Penny to get the job but also heard Martin Foyle and Chris Coleman are in the frame, (I don't believe the coleman rumour)

Must pick up Donny game up sometime! just to see how the other half live!
