Painful
« on April 25, 2011, 10:01:52 pm by coventryrover »
Firstly, well played the lads today.  Good performance by the sounds of it but gutting to be 3 mins from safety.

I am finding all this excruciating rather than exciting.  Wishing the next match was the next day rather than having to wait til the weekend.  Its putting me in a vile mood with my lovely missus.

I know we are 6 pts ahead and 8 goals gd but still have a sick feeling , can someone post some words of wisdom so I'LL STOP BEING SUCH A MISERABLE T@@T

Yep it's all over and no one will overturn the points let alone the goal difference. Buy her some flowers , perhaps take her out for a meal..........I did this weekend!lol
Rest happy and look forward to the next Championship fixture list. :)

We conceded 5 in 50 mins versus Leicester last time. If sheff utd can win at reading anything can happen and probably will

Are you sure you understand what a nine goal swing means Norfolk?
Whilst the odds are it wont happen and I am certain it wont but................................If we lost 2-0 at home on Saturday and 3-0 at Middlesbro plus Sheffield United win their next two games by the same score they would go above us.

And before all the stupid idiots start NO I am not being negative just making a point to Norfolk.

What does it matter that we beat United? Some leagues do sort tied teams on a head-to-head results basis but we still use goal difference. It's a 9 goal swing because our goal difference is 8 better but we have scored more (the next sorting criteria). A 9 goal swing isn't huge.

That said, I think we're safe its just that niggly feeling like when you go out and you know you've locked the back door but somehow get it into your head that you haven't and then try and convince yourself of something you were certain of anyway!

Bring on Saturday!

if we both end on same GD then it would go to the games played between the teams ....how else you going to do it?

In alphabetical order?

If Goal Difference equal then the team with more goals scored is ranked higher

After that I don't know. Head to head results? One off playoff? Don't think it has ever happened in a position which means anything and needs sorted - e.g. if 15th and 16th were equal then just call them equal 15th.

We have scored 12 more than the Blades and I don't think they will score 12.

No, if GD is level it goes to goals scored. If goals scored is level it goes to a play off. Spent a few minutes on the FL website this morning to confirm it.

Check FL website agaIn , Regulation 9.1: If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored......

PS we do have a fallback in that if we lose our last two, we can be safe if Palace lose their last two (Ull A and Forest H) and we get +1 GD swing on them.  Not likely if Blunts have caught us though.

Without that stupid 7 minutes of added time at Bramall Lane we wouldn't be having this conversation !
Hope that doesn't come back to bite us again.

Ah ok, must have missed that last bit when I read it. Either way, Sheff Utd are going to have to go goal crazy to overhaul us assuming we don't get another point.

So DN can we take it that it will actually take a TEN goal swing for the Blades to overtake us aTEN goal swing unless they score at least 12,  which is never going to happen .

No, nine (we're 8 better at mo but have scored more, hence them needing the ninth)

No I think its still 9? Once they have a better GD than us everything else becomes irrelevant. Eg if ours decreases by 4(lose both games 2-0 say) and theirs increases by 5 (win 3-0 and 2-0) then ours would be -27 and theirs -26.

Millwall 1 point lost
Swansea  2 points lost
Sheff utd 2 points lost

Are the only games where we`ve lost points due to goals being scored in added time

on the other hand

Bristol city 1 point gained
Watford 1 point gained
Middlesborough 2 points gained

Where we have got points through scoring in added time

Pretty much evens it`s self out over the season, admittedly take away the added time goals that have changed the result of a match and we would be 1 point better off now and safe!

True, I was mentally counting Cardiff (H), Barnsley (A), Reading (A) and Coventry (A) so perhaps added time wasn't the right term - more seeing the game out in the last ten minutes!

I don't see why everyone sees 9 goals over 2 games as insurmountable. for us to lose both and Blades to win both by 1 goal would be a 4 goal 'swing' for starters.

even if we lose by a 1-0 margin in both games, the Blades need to win 4-0 against Barnsley and 3-0 against Swansea.

A more likely scenario is that we get tonked again by Leicester (3 or 4?), and Blades win by a couple against Barnsley, then our 9 goal advantage will be a 3 goal advantage. If we lose by 2 to Boro then the Blades will only have to win by 1 against Swansea.

I think we'll lose against Leicester and they will beat Barnsley. More arse nipping and maths needed right to the end of the season!

I am also still nervous, even though on the surface our chances are excellent (ask any bookie)

Leicester are 6 points and 9 goals behind the last playoff spot so will still be going for that very small chance and wanting lots of goals

Boro are winning for fun, and scoring 4 at Hull shows they can score

Never thought I would say it but shame Leeds lost yesterday

If I were a Blades fan I wouldn't be ruling anything out. They are winning and scoring goals although are also conceding plenty too. I really could see them winning their last two games.

Blades have only won by a goal margin of more than one once this season and Swansea have the best home defence. It will take something special for them to stay up now. Even two narrow losses for us should see us safe.

I'll try and cheer you up with some selective use of Stats( warning: I'm no Dutch or BST).

United have the second worse goals for in the league and they have to visit Swansea who have the second best goals against record. Irrespective of the personnel they have on the pitch, Swansea will get the ball down and pass it. They are not a side that you can go gung ho against as that will simply play into their hands. We have only lost one in 4. Barnsley are undefeated in South Yorkshire derbies this season. Despite our defensive deficiencies we have conceeded 12 goals in the last 9 games- over the same period united have conceeded 18. Both teams have a minus 6 goal difference over this period.

Finally, if you are still worried we will go down put £20 on at William Hills- you'll collect £1000 should the worst happen.

I've almost convinced myself!

Leicester have some super players that we are agreed but their away form certainly nothing amazing!

Boro will have nothing to play for also in the last game...who to say we cant win both?

Question from a very nervous GoldenAngel - Will we stay up???  I am trying to be positive and concentrating hard not to think of the R word but my stomach is in knots!  The repercussions for the whole town are unthinkable!

Any words of wisdom to reassure us all????

Went to Barnsley on Monday and that certainly didn't help......

One thing is for sure... Watch this space.... if we stay up Toad Brewery will be doing something that involves partying and free beer

Personally I think it's not a foregone conclusion although Sheffield United have it all to do.

Yakubu vs Thomas! If I were Thomas I'd be scared stiff. It's got goals written all over it. If I were Shelton I'd be staying injured.

The good news is that Sullivan is back. Unlike young Woods he has the experience to stay calm and marshall the defence. I think that Woods has been given a bit too much leeway in recent games. He's a decent enough shot stopper but they all are in the Football League. To be athletic and agile isn't enough I'm afraid. Woods is a prospect but, at this stage of his career, he's among the worst in the Championship. That's not a criticism by the way just an observation of how he measures up against his peers. In the Championship in particular you have to exude confidence and manage your defence. This in turn transmits itself through the team. I think it's been noticeably lacking over the last couple of months and for a 'confidence' team like Rovers it's been one of the key reasons for the slide.

That said, on Saturday, I think an early goal for us could see 3 points.
