Budget
« on May 06, 2011, 07:58:56 am by MrFrost »
Accoring to Seth Bennet on his facebook page this morning, DRFC had already mazes out the budget with current players under contract and SOD will have to sell players in the summer.

Seth Bennetts direct quote.

#drfc budget maxed out with players under contract. Sod will have to either sell or the clubs directors will have to raise budget

I am not too worried to be honest i think the latter will happen i:e the board will put some more in.

Does the 'players under contract' still count the ones who are going to be out of contract in the summer? surely we're still paying them until the end of their contract? If it does then surely it wont be maxed out when players do leave..

No surprise really.

With the attendances as they are I dont think it's fair for the directors to suppliment the budget for transfers unless SOD does a little bit of wheeler dealing by selling some of those that are not in his plans.

Tricky task but thats part and parcel of managing a club the size of ours with the attendances we get.

Certainly doubt we will have another Billy Sharp scenario where his transfer was funded entirely by the directors.

An interesting close season this coming one as it will give us an indication of where we are going.  There's no doubt the first 11 can compete at this level but is the strength in depth good enough?  I would argue not, especially at centre back.  This is the area where SOD must wheel and deal the most.  Hopefully he wont panic buy a couple of substandard defenders like last year.

You do not really expect any manager to say \" yeah, I have a huge transfer kitty, and my budget will rise next year!\" every player we look at would have an extra couple of zero's attached to his fee and wages. Last year was a one off, we will carry on as before.

We will have to endure another pre-season of \"Mouth watering signings\" and other pointless salesmans patter from JR.

Football is a rich mans game now, and the board know that. Without spending more of their money the club won't go up the league. It's pretty simple. Not that I be-grudge them not spending, it's been a good ride up to this season, but please don't try and fool the punters by telling them all sorts of nonsense to try and get them to part with their money.

Personally I think no decent money will be spent by Rovers this summer and next season will be one of fighting for a place in the championship again. It might just be the time where the board don't want to fund the club any more? After all, which decent club in the upper reaches of football actually turns a profit without a huge overdraft/loan in the background? It's a reality of successful football - you overspend, then you hope you become successful. Have the board got the money to fund this or the balls to take a gamble? We'll see.

The thing with Rovers is we never seem to conform to what we should be doing. Every season for the past 4/5 seasons we've had a small(ish) budget compared to most in the league we're in and yet we've improved year on year.

Last season, however, we spent big (in our terms anyway) and yet it's the first season in a long time that we've not improved on the previous season. Ok, there are other factors too but i do think it had a massive impact too. The signing of Sharp IMO added huge pressure on the rest of the squad and not just Sharp himself. And even though they did say that the signing was from the directors pockets, it had to have had an impact on other signings surely.

Hopefully, going back to how we usually have our budgets with no massive signings like Sharp, SOD can do his usual dealing with nothing to bring in fantastic players and improve once more.

SOD is on record as saying that the longer we stay in this division the harder it will become as the bigger clubs will just cherry-pick our better players. He feels the club needs to operate in a niche market in being an attractive destination for young players who will develop their game with us before moving on to bigger and better things. He's said that whether that is in the Championship or League One, under his stewardship or someone else's, that should be the realistic aim of the club.

Just a shame we have not got a youth team structure worthy of the name that brings youngsters through to the first team.

And as a short/medium-term strategy, it's hard to argue against.
