Our Board's ( extra) added value
« on June 20, 2011, 09:53:28 pm by graingrover »
1.
Purchase of Keepmoat stadium during this exceptional window of political opportunity.
2.
Second year of exceptional' beyond budget'investment in playing staff ...transfer fees and /or wage overshoot. ...... Shackell, Kilkenny .
3
Let SOD do the rest on his magic  multicoloured fantasy jigsaw  console .

The above should  secure our club's future; both in terms of  potential  profitable onward sale of the club, and in terms of our Championship status , with a whiff of play-offs future aspirations.

I still think JR missed a trick massively with the none signing of Shackell when we were in the box seat with the fella.

I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but surly it was a no brainer to have gone the extra yard and got him in at the beginning of last season, paid the small fee for him (circa 500K) and wage demand.

For that outlay we would of had the benefit of the best left sided centre half in this league for all of last season, what that would of done for our strength and moral over the season is indeterminable, easy safety or possibly flirting with playoffs was a given, we would of saved the wages and outlay on three poss four centre halfs over the period of the season, god knows how much we had to spend for that little lot, and more importantly did not work for us, massive waste of cash and goodwill from the club.

We would now be in the position of the dirty dingles, either sitting on another season of top class play from a quality defender or hawking him around all the top clubs in this league, also i would bet my misses that we would be asking for a much higher fee than the stinky lot from down the road are going to settle for. Final result, the club is either further strengthened and developed or we get a nice fee for future outlay on a new prospect.

Overall, unusually bad management and planning from the special one on this occasion. I would imagine this has been a lesson learnt (or hope it has) now go and buy the KMS, invest shrewdly in talent for this season and watch the season ticket holders come flocking back. The club needs the boost of quality players otherwise we will be playing to league 2 crowds. Many season ticket holders from last season are waiting for a sign JR, can you provide the spark.

Very sad we did not sign him too    .... especially as he played without injury all Season

44 games in the League missing I presume a couple for a Red Card

Cheesy I know, but you don't drive a car forward by constantly looking in your rear view mirror. Time to put this one behind us and look forward, and there's plenty of that!

I was a big fan of Shackell when he was here and was really disappointed we didn't get him, but he's making himself look like a bit of a mercenary now in my opinion.

His decision to join Barnsley ahead of the club he had enjoyed a successful loan spell at was based purely on money (thankfully something Sharp was less swayed by). Now he's taken another sideways step to a distinctly average Derby team, no doubt for another payrise.

I understand footballers obviously want to be paid as much as possible (like anyone) but Shackell isn't showing much loyalty or staying power anywhere. If he'd stayed here, or Barnsley, for a while longer and continued to perform at the level he has done then I'm sure it wouldn't have been long before a top club came knocking. As it is he's probably going to end up playing out more time at various clubs beneath him before that chance comes.

Onwards and upwards for us, but it's definitely not a position we should be looking to take short cuts in. The likes of Shackell, and Matt Mills before him, made a huge difference to our stability and gave us a platform from which to play the kind of football we want to. We need a big player to fill the void they left.

You miss my point entirely BR, The painful thing was that we did spend nearly all of last season trying to go forward but all the time looking in our rear view mirror because of the predicament we set ourselves by letting a player through our grasp only to pay three times as much on sub standard goods.

The fact in this case we mentioned Shackell is immaterial, it could of been anyone. The point was that we had a poor season because our planning went tits up. We then compounded it by scouring the pound bins for backup and overspending in the process.

Like you stated we have plenty to look forward to but it has to be based on solid foundations, we had the opportunity to build on granite but ended up with sandstone.

I hope we have learnt the painful and costly lesson. When the opportunity presents itself to us again(and it will) we will know exactly what to do.

Good deal for Barnsley ... even if they have paid him 10,000 a week for that one season they end up making half a million pure profit since they signed him on a free .

There is no such things as a FREE. All it means is he or his agent can negotiate his own signing on fee. Which will be almost as big as a transfer fee in some cases.

Easy to be wise with that kind of hindsight isn't it.  What the OP casually ignores is the countless examples of clubs throwing money around to overpay players and then paying the price heavily when it 'goes tits up'.
I too was gutted to miss out on Shackel, and absolutely agree that with that wonderful hindsight, we surely did pay more than we would have had we conceeded to his demands, but without access to any crystal ball JR made what I and many others believe was a sensible and correct decision at the time.

And do us a favour OP, the bloody word is HAVE!
