Non-League Day

If you can't get up to Hartlepool for the Rovers match then instead of sitting and watching the results go in, or this forum tick over, why not get involved in Non League Day.
For those who don't know about it; Non League Day is a now annual event celebrating the semi-professional and amateur game, and its aim is to encourage fans of 'big'/professional clubs to back their local community sides as well.
To quote the day's founder James Doe; "Given the current financial climate, clubs outside the football league need all the support they can get, so your presence at a game will be genuinely appreciated. With tickets and refreshments at a fraction of the cost, what's stopping you!"
There was a guide to where you can find many of the town's non-league sides in the latest fanzine, and
that's now available on our website
. Alternatively you can find your nearest non-league game by consulting
the Non-League Day website.

If you were thinking of going to Askern Villa vs Albion Sports you'll need to make other plans.
Match is off, Askern unable to raise a side according to the League

I saw possibly the best game that I have seen at any level this season yesterday.
FA VASE 4th round Thackley v Scarborough.
£5 on the gate although I could have got away with £2.50 being over 60. Timothy Taylor's lanlord on the hand pumps at £2.70 a pint.
Being a social club member reduced this for me to £2.20.
An excellent first half Thackley just shaded it but conceded an equaliser just before half-time.
A pint in the clubhouse and the back out for the second half. Thackey went behind 2-1 which led to a 50ish year old Scarborough fan having a slagging match with our own Vince Brockie the Thackley manager.
Eventually Vince told him if you want to call me a c*** meet me outside ovcer there after the game and call me one then.
Cue Vince being sent to the sands by the ref. Not round the perimeter he stormed straight across. Thackley made it 2-2 and one of the Scarborough fans the starteed berating his own team.
The Scarborough right back then had a slanging match with said fan whilst lining up a free kick. Thackley scored a late winner to end up as the winners. At the final whistle Vince Brockie who had been allowed near the dug out after the Scarborough fan moved went onto the pitch and shook hands with players of both sides.
A great game between two sides that both wanted to win. Two of the goals would have graced any game at any level.Full blooded challenges with no diving. Thackley's team included three teenagers who all acquitted themselves well. They maybe earn £50 a game/week but what commitment. It was a breath of fresh air for me. It was like going back to how every game of football should be.

I was loving that report till I got to "Full blooded challenges" C'mon you know footie is virtually a non contact sport nowadays
Sometimes you do see the proper battling footie outside the professional side of the game and yes its usually a pleasure to watch

A bit of clarification required please Idler. Vince Brockie was sent to the stands. This is Thackley we are talking about, can you please confirm
a) Thackley have a stand
b) Thackley have more than one stand
or did you mean our Vince was sent to go and stand on his own on the naughty step?
Ta
(great report by the way)

Hi Wilts. They do have one stand and it even has a press box at the back, built to comply with league rules some years ago.
It's a great little ground with a lovely playing surface. They have an academy side and do well bringing young local lads through.
I love going there, being able to have a beer, stand and have a great view. You are near the action and can hear everything that's going on.
Listening to Vince Brocky is always entertaining as I normally stand near the dug outs. The last time before Saturday there was a female ref. some of Vince's non pc comments were classic.
When I said full blooded challenges I meant hard but fair. These were usually given nad taken with good grace just as it used to be.

I went over to Leeds to cheer on Rossington Main to a 3-2 win against Yorkshire Amateur.
Witnessed a cracking match; Main went 2-0 up, Amateur pulled it back to 2-2 and then the final half an hour saw play swing from end to end, with Main eventually winning it. Two cracking goals amongst the five scored too,
and they're now up on Rossington Main's website to view
. Video also features one of the most blatant, yet unpunished penalty box fouls I've ever seen.
