A Tough fixture, but there isn't much between any of the teams in this league,it's going to be close,i'd go for us winning on penalties!!

This "Crewe", is he Graham Alexander's brother? ;)

But yes, tough fixture but one we can win. Could easily go either way and I'm sure it'll be a tight game.

It was the last time we won the trophy..........saved by the Afro goal machine on that day. Still going for a win despite not having JP.

Definitely a tight game this one hoola and Roversalias,i remember that game,we were two nil down at one point if i remember right,i was listening to it on a very crackly Radio Sheffield signal, and ofcourse we come back to win in extra-time,it would be great if we could get to the final again, just the boost we could do with after last season!!

I can't think of JJ Price without thinking of that game. What a comeback on a brilliant night at the Keepmoat that was.

Despite the best efforts of Trevor "take it again for no reason" Kettle.

.... or looked at another way ..

Trevor I will Rovers play on even when the ball was almost on the running track on West Stand side ... and then I will give them a Penalty even though it was extremely bordeline

One of my favourite memories of football ever having not been at the game, that Crewe game.

I was at university in Nottingham and my brother came to stay and watch the game; we must have been around 5-6 pubs near to where I lived which refused to show the game. We finally found one just before kick off - completely empty except for 3 shirted up Crewe fans. We took a table in front of them, got chatting and before you know it they're 2 - 0 up. Tired of their jokes, we proceed to drown our sorrows (possibly not the best thing to admit given the current goings on!), only for the unbelievable to happen and crazy, crazy celebrations. I'd take another game with half that entertainment value.

It was never out! JJ kept that ball in play with pure deft brilliance ;)

Actually we won in normal time with an 87th minute winner from Afro goal machine.
We won in extra time in the final
Both cracking games though!

I judged it the same as Roy Carroll who as you can see kept this one out with pure deft brilliance

I think when we're talking about Price it's more like pure daft brilliance.

I remember I missed the Crewe game as I was really ill. I turned the radio on and found we were 2-0 down, so after listening for a bit I went to sleep because I felt like death, we weren't playing well, and it sounded like a lost cause. When I woke up and turned the radio on again we'd just scored to make it 3-2! One of the most surreal moments I can remember supporting Rovers, it's amazing just how good this competition can be once clubs start taking it seriously.

That game definitely ranks in my top 10 of watching Rovers over the years. At half time the concourses were full of moaners including me btw, at full time only jubilation such as I've only seen on maybe a dozen times over the years and the legend of the Afro goalmachine then went into the annals of our history.
A great great moment and of course we went on to win the final on a lovely day in Cardiff........still being teased by our team once again before the cup was lifted .  :rtid: :rtid: :rtid:

Nicky Maynard also had a 90th minute leveller ruled offside when replays showed he was 2 yards on. Everything in the second half went our way apart from the penalty retake... Brilliant night, I was sat in the west stand close to the Crewe fans and being on the front row I had the worst view for all 5 goals but it was absolutley brilliant, along with Scunthorpe that season as well when we drew 2-2 from being 2-0 behind.

Must be up there with Southend play off tie as best game seen at the Keepmoat since our move there.

Didn't they beat us 8-0 one year when non-league sides were allowed to enter, or am I totally off the mark??

I seem to remember Wigan beating us 8-0 one year, when it was the LDV Vans Trophy.

Edit: actually, you're right, it was Crewe who beat us 8-0. We beat Wigan 1-0 to get to Crewe. Got me wires crossed there!

Maynard was on but Higdon, who cushioned it down for him was offside. Correct decision, I just don't think we were sure at the time who the lino was flagging.

What no-one has mentioned yet is that there was a bout of illness going through the squad at the time and we struggled to raise a team, never mind get them to run around for 90 minutes. Didn't we try and get the game postponed? the Paul's Heffernan and Green in particular looked a bit white.
