IF WE GO UP
« on November 18, 2012, 11:16:36 pm by donnyallday »
Who and how much rebuilding would we need to stay up.

G.Woods not ready, Sheff Wed and Hudders didnt think the twin towers good enough by releasing them.

Apart from M.Woods Bennett Cotts and Hume, who else is up for the task.

So how much and who do we / what need realistic thoughts of course.

Discuss.

Just cause other managers didn't think they were good enough don't mean they aren't. Blackwell didn't think sharp was good enough

We have a good solid, functional league 1 side, who would go straight back down without spending an awful lot of money which would in turn defeat the object of this season.
If we were to go up I think there might be 2 or 3 additions and a cross our fingers attitude from JR et al.

Jones would definitely do a job in the Championship. He might not be the rock he is for us now as the quicker and more technical players in the Champ would cause him more problems, but his positional play and strength would still be as good. Add in a couple of creative attacking players here and there and build on what we already have and we'd do alright. Easier said than done of course.

Jones cotterill and Hume are the only ones I think would be good enough. Happy with how we're doing but this team is a long way off what got promoted last time.

We wouldn't be ok, just your reasoning about those two not being good enough was what I was picking up on.
Hume, jones, spurr, cotterill, husband, clingan, Bennett, would all do a job.
We'd need a goalie, a striker, couple of centre mids and 3 or 4 defenders, to do ok in championship

We wouldn't be good enough but, as with any promoted team if you tinker too much you rip out the heart of the team that got you there.

The one thing that we wished we had through much of our time in the Championship was a stronger defence. I think Jones Husband and Griffin could hold their end up especially with a stronger keeper.

Other than that though we're struggling. May be Hume, Martin Woods, Michael Woods, Bennett, Copps if he comes back, will be able to cut it.

The standard of League One this year is poor, so bridging the gap will be more difficult than last time around but hey, we take our chances and see what happens.

In Deano's latest interview he indicated he wants to bring in a few 18/19 year olds to blend in the best of the youth that we already have to look to the future. He knows we have a very limited shelf life with the players we have in the first team at the moment.

To me that sounds very positive that he has a vision of where he wants to be and is not satisfied with doing just enough to survive.

From what I've seen and heard from Deano so far gives me confidence that we can once again punch beyond our weight.

It would be a battle to stay up IF we got there,it's best to have the team ready for next season,in this division,we already need another keeper to either give competition or replace Woods, that's what he needs good competition,Maxted could step up,but it's going into the unknown with him having so few games under his belt,Maxted ideally could do with a good six month loan at the same club, with regular games.
Jones would be alright in the Championship providing he's got a defensive partner at the side of him with a bit of pace, plus good positional sense, you couldn't play him and McCombe at the back and get away with it in that division,Spurr definitely is good enough for that division, but you would need a winger in front of him that gives some protection, because he isn't the quickest, but on the plus side he's good positionally and decent going forward,Griffin ability wise if he hasn't deteoriated as a player in that time would be useful with his experience, though again not the quickest.
Midfield Keegan would probably get over run in that league,Harper the same as Griffin if he hasn't gone backwards in twelve months would be alright,Martin Woods upto now hasn't got his form back,if he did the Championship would suit him better than this league, more passing on the floor,on the wings Cotterill and Bennett don't give massive protection to their full backs, but if they are doing the business further forward that's okay.
Forwards Hume is definitely good enough, and would score goals,Brown and Paynter wouldn't get that many in that division
With our current team i think we would be fighting relegation,it would be close between going down and staying up,we wouldn't score enough goals with our current forward line, but i don't think the defence would leak loads either,A Good question posed donnyallday.

Burnley, Wolves, Bolton, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley, Ipswich, Bristol City, Peterborough.
They are the bottom 10 sides who would be roughly the sort of standard next season we'd have to get points from in order to stay up. Personally i wouldn't be confident of getting much either home or away.
I would imagine 30 or so points needed from those 20 games and scrape a few unexpected points from the top half to stay up b

personally i would like to make sure we are safe from relegation and then start blooding young players for the next season ( i do not know the lenght of contracts players are on )so it could be the same next season as it is this season with the budget.

More or less agree with Burton's team there. Maybe put Husband on the left and Cotts on the right if Husband continues to improve as he has done this season.
