Leon Britton
« on February 24, 2013, 04:43:28 pm by andysly »
Just wondering that given the similarity of our rise to Championship from Conference to Swansea's fourth tier to Prem whether we'd have any players who could have gone with us to the next step if we'd have made the top flight a couple of years ago.
Can't include any players who joined us in the championship.

Stock - definitely if fit
Wellens - maybe for a season
Greeny - if he hadn't gone to Derby
Mills - again if he hadn't moved on

O'Connor I think, before our decline began anyway. Once injuries set in and we were playing here there and every f**king where each week that ruined him for us.

Of course Copps, agree totally with JO'C as well, start to see what a decent team we had.
Sharp doesn't count.

Honestly think McIndoe in his prime could have been a decent PL player. He almost got there with Bristol City too, I seem to remember.

Gordon Greer. Easily better than Caldwell etc at entry level prem standard.

Have to say that I'm astonished Leon Brittan has made it in the Premiership.

He looked a good 4 stone overweight when he was Home Secretary in the 80s.

Theres no doubt in my mind that for a spell in that first championship season that JOC was premiership class. (By which I mean Wigan/Stoke/Norwich more than Spurs/Chelsea/Everton etc!)

McIndoe of course never played for us in the Conference - although he did play against us there. I always thought Simon Marples could play at a higher level, wasn't he supposed to be going to Sunderland or somewhere like that until he had a couple of bad injuries?

Greer would have been a decent player in the Prem.  He could get there this year too the way Brighton are going.

Saw Brian Stock play against Brighton on Saturday, an absolute shadow of his former self.  Got no-where near the game and somehow didnt get subbed.

Thornton could have gotten back there with us had he not pissed away his career.

Andy Watson could have made it in the Premiership. I seem to remember Doncaster Belles were looking at him at one bit.

He was rubbish! I think people remember him fondly because of his massively deflected goal in the Villa hammering.

I always thought he was good for us even before then though. He was shite in the second season, I'll give you that, but in his first I thought he'd have made the grade had he had the right attitude off the pitch.

He was like a poor man's Martin Woods. He'd ask for the ball, and when he got it would return it straight back!

Funnily enough it was Brian Flynn who got the ball rolling with Swansea. Made several signings in League Two who proved to be key in Swansea's rise up the league. Leon Britton being one of them.

I know you're all going to laugh here, but I think a fit Paul Barnes (now there's an oxymoron if ever you've seen one!) who had the benefit of first class training and padlocks on the burger vans, would have troubled the score sheet for a lower premiership side.

Stock - nah.
Wellens - nah.
Mills - nope.
Green - Possibly, but I think Derby was the completely wrong club to go to.
I'll say it again too - Andy Watson was a player who never made what he should have done out of his immense talent.

All you'd have to do for Barnes would be promise to give him the key to said padlock in June IF and only if he hits 20 goals that season.

Really interesting suggestion, Barnes. Obviously he came to us late on in his career but he had the knack of finding himself with the ball at his feet 2 yards from the goal line - that's valuable no matter what level you play at and a precious skill. I don't think he ever had quite enough in other areas of his game to make it much higher, but if he cut down the brown ale and pork pies, who knows.
