A 2008/2013 squad
« on April 19, 2013, 07:43:10 pm by Belle-Vue-Ghost »
With the current squad on the verge of something very special, we've already had opinions on which team was better. However, if you could make a matchday squad, for one game, made up of a combination of players from both teams, who would YOU have in it. Personally, I'd go for;

Sullivan

O'Connor
Mills
Jones
Spurr

Coppinger
Stock
Wellens
Cotterill

Hume
Heffernan

Subs

Woods (Gary)
Roberts
McCombe
Green
Price
Brown
Paynter

There are probably a couple of glaringly obvious names I've missed out but hey ho, I've quickly just stuck that together.

I wouldn't fear many at the level above with that squad (assuming all the players were in their prime, of course).

I'm bewildered how anyone can watch Chris Brown play for us and not recognise him as the best line-leader we've had since the days of Alan Warboys or Big Bren. Given his performances over the season as a whole, he would be an automatic choice in ANY Rovers side of the past 30-odd years. And it I take off the rose-tinted glasses, probably a long time before that as well.

Two performances alone this season have been enough to secure him a place in the list of Rovers all time greats - Blades away and Swindon at home, where he gave master-classes in how to lead the line.

Brown and Heffernan would have been brilliant.

Got to admit I struggled with Brown. It was close between him and Heffernan but I went for Heffs on his finishing. In my view one of the 2 forward players needs to be the energy (Hume) and someone to lead the line/finish. I would've had Heffs & Brown but I don't feel it would be a mobile enough pairing.

Come on people I need some SQUADS as well as opinions

Brown and Sharp for me every day (thought it strange that no-one had mentioned Sharp - just realised why) Still agree with BST, he has to be the best target man since the 70s

Shame Sharp wasn't in either promotion squad :P

I'd like to post a squad but it'd be exactly the same as yours BVG with the exception of Heffs on the bench for Brown.

Chris's Dad was very good at holding the ball up too , though not a target man as his son is . The match I best remember him for was at Nothampton Town . The team coach broke down and the players hitched lifts to the match already in the kit they had hd to put on in the bus . Despite the havoc ,we set off like madmen in that match and were 3-0 up in no time.

I dont think we can underestimate Adam Lockwoods impact in the 07/08 season, he did captain us for half of the season and did score quite a few goals, a lot from open play.

Its just a shame Gordon Greer got injured, as he shown after leaving us he was one of the best CBs (and captain) to play in this league.

Interesting comments from Copps about the comparison.

He says of the 2008 team we (current team) would struggle to get possession off them but they had a soft defence, whereas the current team is stronger in defence and on the break. He says he fits in better with the 2008 team than the current.

I can understand where he's coming from but if the squad of 2008 had the same desire and strength, we wouldn't have had to go to Wembley.

Having said that, give me a footballing team any day. Another season with Furman, Lundstarm, Syers and we will have something the others haven't.

The 2009/10 squad were 2 players short of a play-off team. 2 points shy of Blackpool, a game in hand, and all we had to do was beat Plymouth at home to put us in the mix. Blackpool pushed on and got promoted from the play-offs. We didn't believe.

Fine lines chaps, fine lines !!

2008 team were a better side by a distance BUT...this team would not have lost at Cheltenham.
If thats not too contradictory.
