"Goals" that were not given, involving Rovers
« on May 18, 2013, 04:41:53 am by les@donr »
I remember a Conference game Rovers v Northwich Victoria where Gregg Blundell then playing for the Vics scampered down the left wing let go a bullet of a shot that hit the goal frame and came out. Everyone in the ground knew it was a goal and some even applauded Gregg, but it was not given by the ref who was not up with play. Gregg stood there with a bemused look on his face. Vics won 4-1. Not too long after Gregg signed for Rovers, maybe that "goal" clinched the deal.

Sounds uncannily like the Telford game when we lost 3-1...but Blundell hasn't played for them.

I thought it  was Telford who won 4-1....and the 'goal' was a carbon copy of the famous Clive Allen non-goal where the ball hit the stanchion inside the goal and bounced straight back out so the ref missed it...

Mark McCammon scored at Brentford. There was an hole in the net, which the ball went straight through and a goal kick was given. It was almost in the middle of the goal!

I saw both of those and one at Rochdale in 1969.
The net behind the goal at Rochdale was only a couple of feet deep and stretched tight.
John Regan powered a header in and it came straight back out as if it had hit a trampoline. Their fans reckoned that it had happened once or twice. Luckily we at least drew 0 0 and went up as champions. :scarf:

Definitely Telford:

Saturday 18th January 2003

Nationwide Football Conference.

Rovers (0) 1 (Barnes 85)
Telford United (1) 3 (Smith 15, Sayer 76, Moore 83)

Rovers: Warrington, Mustafa (sub: Jackson, HT), Barrick, Morley,
Albrighton, Owen  (sub: Ravenhill, 85 mins), Paterson, Green, Barnes
Gill  (sub: Whitman, 83 mins), Watson. Unused subs: Foster, Nelson.

Telford: Pettinger, Davies, Hanmer, Foran, G. Brown, King, Fitzpatrick (sub:
Sayer, 26 mins), Barlow, Cameron, Moore, Smith. Unused subs: Jobling, Jones.

Attendance: 3,323.

Referee: S. Brand (Wirral).

Bookings: Rovers: Morley. Telford: King, Hanmer, Davies, Moore. Sent off:
None.

Nationwide site:
Telford inflicted promotion-chasing Doncaster's first home defeat of the
season with an excellent performance in a game packed with action and
controversy.

United should have had another goal when Paul Moore fired into the back of
the net when they were 1-0 up in the 67th minute.

But the ball came back off the stanchion and referee Steve Brand waved play
on although later admitted his error after the match.

Telford boss Jake King, who was irate at the time, said later: "The referee
has apologised to me and said there had been a mistake.

"Everybody makes them and I don't have a problem with that so I shook his
hand.

"Fortunately it didn't affect the result but it could have been costly
because they went straight upfield while we’re celebrating and almost got an
equaliser."

Doncaster manager Dave Penney said: "It looked a goal from where I was
standing and our players thought it had gone in as well.

"It was a lifeline for us which we didn't take because although we had lots
of possession, we never really looked like scoring."

Telford were lively at the start with new on-loan striker Dave Cameron from
Chester linking up well in attack.

Cameron had a close-range header tipped over the bar by Andy Warrington
after latching on to a left-wing cross from Gareth Hanmer in the third
minute.

Doncaster played too many sideways and backwards passes in the early stages
to the dismay of their fans who urged them to take a more direct approach.

Lively teenage midfielder Paul Green twice went close before the visitors
took the lead in the 15th minute.

Cameron threaded a clever pass through to former Doncaster striker Peter
Smith in the penalty area and he fired between the keeper's legs and into
the net.

Robert Gill volleyed widely off target when Doncaster tried to hit back
before Cameron sent an angled drive just wide in the 20th minute.

Moore missed two clear-cut chances for the visitors just before the interval
and Doncaster rode their look to adopt a more attacking approach in the
second half.

Green had a header tipped over the top following a free-kick in the 59th
minute before Telford had their goal disallowed in controversial
circumstances.

But it made no difference when substitute Ronnie Sayer hammered home the
second goal via the upright following a corner in the 76th minute.

Moore wrapped up the points when he juggled with the ball before slotting it
past home keeper Andy Warrington after latching onto Smith's pass in the
83rd minute.

Paul Barnes grabbed a consolation goal for Doncaster a minute later but it
was too little too late for the home side who were well off form.

BBC Site:

The form book was turned on its head as Telford secured an emphatic victory
at high-flying Doncaster.

Telford, who had been without a win in five games, claimed three points
courtesy of goals from Peter Smith, Ronnie Sayer and Paul Moore against Dave
Penney's men, who could only muster a Paul Barnes strike as consolation.

After a cagey start, Jake King's men took the lead against the run of play
after 15 minutes.

A pinpoint delivery from David Cameron on the left touchline found Smith,
who made no mistake with a clinical left-foot finish from close range to
register his fifth goal of the season.

The visitors were controversially denied a second goal in the 66th minute
after Moore's long-range strike had appeared to go into the net but struck
the stanchion and bounced back out.

Much to the dismay of the Telford players, the referee and his assistant did
not see the incident and waved play on.

But 11 minutes later, that decision proved incidental as Telford sealed the
win, substitute Sayer and Moore (84) giving the visitors breathing space.

Barnes registered his 16th goal of the season 60 seconds later but Telford
ran out deserved winners.

There was an incident on the opening day of the 2009-10 season when a shot from Dean Shiels appeared to cross the line at Watford. However, neither official had a clear view of the incident and the goal wasn't given. The game ended 1-1.

I have a vague memory of a game at Barnet where the ref blows for full-time just before a shot that is in midair goes in. Anyone confirm this or have I dreamt it?

I remember that. I think it was around 1992 or 1993 and it was full-time, not half-time. Rovers were 2-0 down and Peter Heritage had a shot from distance, the ref blew for time and the ball ended up in the net. I think the ref was Paul Danson, who was completely useless.

Wilts there was a famous incident like that in the 1978 World Cup in the Brazil vs Sweden fixture, when the ref blew for full time just as a header (for Sweden to equalise?) was about to cross the line.

Another for us, was at home vs Forest I think in our first championship season during the autumn where we couldn't buy a win, despite excellent performances.  The score was 0-0, and deep into the second half Copps breaks away and loops the ball from distance over their 'keeper.  Hits the underside of the bar and bounces down, quite clearly over the line - even the Forest supporters in the away end thought it was a goal.  The ref and linesman were nowhere near the goal so the game finished 0-0.

Thanks TRB, although wasn't it Andy Crosby rather than the wing commander?

Have found the game- 20th Feb 1993. Barnet 2 Rovers 0. Pretty sure it WAS the Wing Commander. I recall he was particularly cheesed off as it would have been only his second goal for Rovers. (He ended his career with a total of 2).

Not much reaction from the players. Can't imagine scene's being the calm if it was to happen today.

Remember the McCammon effort. Seem to recall Penney checking the net after the game and showing the lino the hole!!!!!! As for the Wing Commander, he endured a terrible season. Think we'd av lost the game at Barnet anyway. Ref blew whistle just before or slightly after the ball left Heritage's boot. Absolute corker of a strike. U sorta knew Heritage was gonna fail at Donny after that goal was disallowed. If I'd av been the ref I'd av given it just for being top draw!!!

Stuart Elliott at home to Forest in our first season in the championship keeper made a mess of it and the ball was about a foot over the line but not given

I seem to recall it was Coops shot that Camp fumbled. My friend who is a photographer captured it quite clearly, the ball did not cross the line.

I'm very sure of Gregg's goal against us. I was sitting in the main stand at BV, and was in line with the penalty area, I saw Gregg's shot flew in and then out again and the ref waved play on, I think Rovers went down the other end and scored.

I think it was Elliott against Forest, but Copps had one over the line disallowed that same season. I'm sure that was against Blackpool though, rather than Forest.

I remember the Telford one too, though we lost anyway it was hilarious. It hit the stancion, came back out and we broke up the field whilst literally 8 of Telford's team were celebrating in the dug out.

I know Sky isn't exactly the most credible source, but their match reports says it was Coops.

No, it was Coppinger.
