I keep hearing stories about the Rovers buying the Dons, anyone else know anything.?.
Dave Parker wrote a piece for his Rugby League column in the Sun last Friday that the Rovers were buying the Dons for 40K and it was to pay the tax bill. Since then the Dons have a statement on their website refuting this. There is often no smoke without fire and there could be an element of truth to this. Look at other clubs who have joined together, Huddersfield Town and Giants, Wigan Athletic and Warriors, Leeds RL and Leeds Carnegie RU. The same owners with one staff working for both teams. Parker must have got a whiff of something from somewhere, he does after all work for John Ryan and the Rovers as well as his work for the BBC, Sun , Brighouse Echo and Rugby Leaguer magazine. If you don't want him to print something, then don't tell him, he does get paid for the stories he writes.[/quoteYou are partly right except the giants and town are separate entities as are athletic and warriors Leeds are owned by the same owner
The point regarding the move is that most of the Dons supporters were based on the north side of town in Bentley Scawthorpe Askern , Skellow etc. When the team left Tattersfield they felt abandoned and decided NOT to go with the team. In many cases they did not have the ability to travel, therefore their kids who would have stayed with the Dons now don't.
In free Press today according to Twitter.
The crowds at the Dons were pitiful in the 70's though. 200 to 300. I used to go along with IanH and some other lads. Despite getting beat every week (you ever seen 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday'?) it was the best value for money entertainment I have ever seen. Anywhere.I've just checked. Looks like these links will still work. One question Its called RUGBY but why in the half time team talk was the coach saying ....lets play football...?My grandad was a rugby league man and to his dying day he referred to rugby league as "football" and to football as "soccer." You have to remember that both games are descended from "folk football" and that in that game hands as well as feet could be used to move the ball. It was only in the 19th century that "association football" became a variant of the game in which hands could not be used- other than by the goalkeeper (and later Diego Maradona!)People tend to think of "soccer" as an Americanism, but it was used extensively in the 19th and early 20th century (sometimes spelled "socker") to distinguish the game from rugby football (or "rugger")- "soccer" being an abbreviated form of "association." It was only with the predominance of the association game in popular culture that "football" became an accepted name for the association form with rugby as the accepted name of the handling codes. In areas where the dominant game in popular culture remained rugby (for example, parts of the West Riding), that code retained the name "football" with "soccer" or "association" for the "other" game. [/quotThey say ypu learn something new everydayThanks for that fella .
