Hull City owner
« on December 01, 2013, 12:12:41 pm by Filo »
"Fans can die as soon as they want"

Quote
Hull owner Assem Allam has come out swinging in his row with sections of the Hull support - and that is an understatement.

You may recall that Allam is keen on renaming the club 'Hull Tigers', and that has led to fans continually chanting 'City til I die' at games.

Allam's response in an interview with the Independent on Sunday is fairly nuclear...

"I don't mind 'City til we die'. They can die as soon as they want, as long as they leave the club for the majority who just want to watch good football," he said.

""How can they call themselves fans, these hooligans, this militant minority, when they disturb and distract the players while taking away the rights of others to watch the football, and of companies who have paid good money for their advertising?"

Some one with a very large ego I think!

Surprised me this quote as the City fans I know think the world of him. Perhaps he was lulling them all into a false sense of security before ripping their past away from them. Seem to remember a certain someone playing that game at Newcastle and it certainly went down like a 'lead balloon' there not sure that the Dull fans can keep Allam at bay though in quite the same way judging by his emphatic comment …..Hull Tigers indeed Grrrrrrt lol

There are very strict FA rules concerning name changes. I doubt this one will happen anytime soon.

Were these rules in force when Wimbledon were rebranded MK Dons?

Yes, but they've been beefed up in recent years. Not only that but they are looking at going even further, even to the point where nicknames are also protected.

We should do more to  protect traits of the English game such as the numbers. I know its not as serious as name changing but it really annoys me when foreign players choose numbers over 30-40 e.g. Bendtner having number 52

He has lived in Hull since the 60's, runs his businesses from there and has had big connections with all the major sports teams for many years!

It was a more generalised comment, I am aware he considers Hull his adopted home and fair play to him in that respect, investing in the area that helped him to make his fortune, he's Egyptian, so therefore a foriegner ;)

I suppose he has a point Hull Tigers is a more distictive, if naff  Americanised name for a football club. Perhaps they would be slightly less opposed if it were to be something more distinctive and yet traditional like Hull Kingston Rovers but sadly for them that ones already taken.

At least Tigers is part of the club history. Whereas Cardiff totally sold out.

He is Egyptian, were gypsies originate from, just to balance your argument.

Along with thousand of years of culture, the origins of written language, literature, science and mathematics. Anyway what would someone who left his home town for the riches of Dubai know about selling out?

Last week I was a guest at Hull v Palace, and the Palace fans were singing "you're not City anymore". Quite good that, but the Hull fans didn't need any winding up, the verbal ones in the east stand at KC really don't want the name change.

Point of order methinks; Wimbledon ceased to exist and a new club, MK Dons took their football league share....

I'm sick and tired of the corporate nature of football. Mk dons in particular sum that up for me and I dont think I will ever attend a game there even if I was given a free ticket.

I'm reafing a book at the moment called "theatre of silence" by Matthew Bazell. Its about how football has lost its soul to greed. Very interesting book.

I couldn't make it over yesterday for qpr so I went to fc united of manchester.  The atmosphere and vibe around the club is unbelievable. With an attendance of 1600 they made a right racket. Although they have an amazing positive atmosphere you can also feel a sense of sadness still over the glazer takeover at man utd. I would happily see drfc in the non leagues if it meant having the same kind of spirit and dignity. Very inspiring.

It felt a bit awkward for me going to see another team but I'm in full support of what they do and as they're local to me I fully intend to attend games when I cant make it to doncaster.

I too was a guest there, in a box. I liked the Hull fans comeback of "you've only come for the culture".

He's a British citizen. So technically not a foreigner.

My mate has been a Cardiff season ticket holder for years but hasn't seen them kick a ball since they changed the kit colour.  He doesn't recognise the new 'team' or  Kuala Lumpur Dragons as he refers to them.  Got to admire his principles, but can't imagine not following Rovers in whatever guise - especially if they ever got to the Premier League.

When will they all learn. Only 20 teams can play in Premier League. Only 4 teams can make it to the Champions League. Why put everything you have on the line just to have a chance of this 'promised land' of Tim Lovejoy, £60 away tickets, dodgy foreign owners and big girl's blouses falling over when wind changes direction. Bloody rubbish.

To be honest I don't think I would go to games if we ever reached the 'promised land', Espescially if it meant selling the club's identity to get there.

Reading viking, tell your friend I applaud his principles, I imagine there are a whole bunch of fans in the same boat

thousands of years of culture was many years ago, they still live by their  dreams and believe they will rise again, only Islam is stopping them from my point of view. I never left my home town for the riches of Dubai, Dubai is another scam for the gullible, why anyone would want to holiday or live there apart from for tax reasons is beyond me. I left there and lived in Egypt for a while and am now back in the  only place I call home.
