What's been bugging me...
« on August 07, 2014, 09:17:35 pm by BillyStubbsTears »
...all summer.

For weeks I've been in a foul mood. Feeling out of love with football. Feeling like I've been short-changed and cheated by the game.

I've suddenly realised what it was.

The complete absence of any obscene names at the World Cup.

No Kuntz
No Quim
No Chiqui Arce
No Bernt Haas
No Milan Fukal
No Johan de Kok
No Lopes Ufarte.

What the f**k is football coming to when the best 32 nations in the world can't muster a couple of Rod Fanni's or Rafael Scheidt's between them?

Bloody rubbish Bramall.

I did IDM.

The world is full of titterful names and yet football is now so straight laced that it has banned them all.

On a non-football theme, my favourite name of all time is someone who once sent me a LinkedIn request. Nancy Felcher.

You'd have liked this chap, Billy.

Whilst I agree that the 2000 Cup Final defeat was hard to take, I have to go back some 40 odd years to Saturday 27th July 1968 for my "Most Painful" defeat ever.

It was the start of our second season in Division 2 and a precursor to our ultimate humiliation of relegation to the old Third Division some two years later. They were dark days and it was very difficult to "keep the faith".

We set off to Bedford to see Villa take on Bedford Town (then a poorish non League side) in a pre-season friendly in which the much vaunted Argentinian Oscar Arce was due to make his debut. He, in fact, came on at half time as a second half substitute for David Rudge (No 10) at inside left. He was awful with a capital "A" as were the Villa! The hapless Lew Chatterley (No 5) at centre half put through his own goal for the only goal of the match.

The match was unique as it was the only time Arce ever appeared in a first team Claret and Light Blue shirt. This puts to bed the myth that has grown up in some quarters that Villa once played a half back line of (Jimmy) Brown, (Oscar) Arce and (Barrie) Hole.

Guess who Lew Chatterley had a loan spell with?

I remember watching him during that loan spell John. Tall bloke he was. Quite elegant. Not a bad player at all for our level! I think he scored for us too.

If I remember right when we played Villa at home on the Friday night he wasn't  allowed to play against his parent club.
We managed to win anyway but still went down eventually.

2-1 wasn't it? I remember that match. A big crowd (well, relatively speaking) and quite some atmosphere. Maybe it was 2-0? No. Don't think so. Wasn't Andy Lockhead playing for the Villa?

Remember watching him play & was sure he notched for us, but according to records he didn't,  funny thread all the same.

I think it was 2  1 Bob. I dashed straight off after the game as I was on nights at Rockware at 10.
One of few happy memories that season.
Football wise that is. ;)

I have been watching old World Cup games on You Tube. Retro Kuntz and Quim is far better than today's offerings.
