He returned from the middle east in 1987 to manage Birmingham, according to Sky Sports (no mention of DRFC):

RIP Dave Mackay. A great player. From a Rovers perspective he was a huge disappointment as a manager. Even though he had little to work with in terms of resources he and Joe Kinnear very nearly led us out of the Football League in 1989.

The story goes that he had just finished a job in the Middle East and was interviewed at half time in a live televised game at Derby. Rovers chairman Bernie Boldry saw the interview, realised Mackay was available and got on the phone to him. That also meant curtains for Rovers' incumbent manager, Dave Cusack!

Did he really manage Al-Shabab in 1983? If so, why wasn't he arrested as soon as his plane touched down when he came back?

Mackay was a classic example of the old school British pro that was admired across the world. Fair and uncompromisingly hard.

As a manager, I lost all respect for him when, having failed with us, he then claimed the credit for the exceptional crop of youngsters who came into the first team during his spell. It was Steve Beaglehole who had developed those players; Mackay was just the manager who inherited them. And did precious little with them, compared to what Bremner very nearly managed a year or so later.

Brian Clough rated him better than Bobby Moore.......that'll do for me.

Spoke to him in the Belle Vue Sponsor's 'Lounge' (I use the term lounge in its broadest of terms!). He spoke highly of Dougie, but 'vague' about where he felt Rovers 'were going'. A great player but as a manager will probably be best remembered for taking over at Derby when Cloughie left & managing to keep them on course to lift the title, but did nowt for us.
