What is entertainment?
« on August 23, 2015, 10:41:45 am by Bristol Red Rover »
I've seen it mentioned many times - "we at least need entertainment".

Accepting that winning is NOT going to happen indefinitely (I know some struggle with that concept), and bottom of the table seasons will happen statistically as frequently as top of the table seasons, what is it that counts as entertainment for people here?

I expect we all have different ideas. In the main, I didn't like SODs style - only sometimes did I feel it had a punch about it. The Penneys Red Arrows worked for me, as did Andersons crew way back, and Saunders in his brief spell. I missed most of the Bremner years, but that sounds like it was similar.

Those displays may not be Championship quality, but they had spirit about them. Some player was always likely to make it through and create something. I felt on the edge of my seat. There was a vibrance and heart about the team. The opposite of that is gutless, ponderous, tippy tappy sidewards, playing it safe, not breaking into a sweat.

I liked ths slick one touch football of odriscall but also liked the wing play from penny. Saunders and dickovs long ball does nothing for me

I didn't particularly like the football we played under Saunders but at least he had a consistent approach and got his players to play the way he wanted. Under Dickov I struggle to discern any kind of consistency in approach or style. And he seems to sign players, especially attackers, with no idea of how to play to their strengths.

Agree exactly TRB. Someone yesterday I think listed the sheer number of strikers that Dickov (himself a veteran Premier League striker remember) has signed for Rovers and to my mind, Chris Brown aside (him no goal machine though) not a single one of them has played to anything like their potential while at Rovers. If anything, under Dickov we have dragged everyone of these poor bas**rds down.

Entertainment.

Moving the ball quickly, and accurately.

running at the opposition defence, wins corners, free kicks, occasional penalties etc - gets folks off their seats.

Making the opposition goalie make saves.

Scoring goals or at least looking like we can score on any attack.

Our defenders putting good hard tackles in when they have to.

Our midfielders breaking up the opposition play.

Our keeper making great saves when he has to.

Keeping going for 90+ minutes.

Outstanding individual goals, like Cotterill, HF, and even Main.

Leaving the stadium feeling I have had value for money.

OK not all of the above in the same game.,  Sometimes a game can get quite technical without much attacking, perhaps against a better side where we have to tough it out - but that can still be entertaining.

Note I didn't mention promotion, nor actually winning.  Wins should follow good performances, over the course of a season.

It think everyone's idea of 'entertainment' is probably slightly different.
I know what entertainment isn't: watching our football team for the last two years

I am pretty sure it is not what the faithful were subjected to yesterday!

All to often not, mfd.

Occasionally yes, but not enough by any measures.
