Do football chairmen?
« on September 10, 2015, 11:00:09 pm by normal rules »
Lump on thousands on the next manager if they have a good idea who it is going to be?

Or get a friend or associate to do it for them?

Surely this happens.

A chance to screw the bookies at their own game with a nailed on bet.

Wonder what odds the bookies had on sod or Saunders or dickov just before they were appointed?

I wouldn't have thought so as it is illegal and is considered quite a serious offence.

Proving it would be difficult.

How would it be illegal? What law would be broken?

Surely it's up to the bookies to decide whether or not to accept bets? Don't they usually suspend betting when somebody is heavily backed all of a sudden, assuming that somebody knows something they don't?
It's screwing the bookies, but I can't see how that in itself is illegal!
It's hardly insider trading, is it?

you can only get peanuts on before the odds change and the betting percentage they bet to is allegedly "on a par with the vulture money lending rates we see on the tv adverts"   no smile here !!

as i keep telling who how did dickov ONCE become 5/2 favourite to become the next sheffield wednesday manager -- based on "nonsense"

he probly went shopping in Sheffield on a "wednesday" and someone put 2 and 2 together

When Beckham and co started kicking the ball out of play on cue, if I remember rightly, the FA were unimpressed because it was allowing betting to influence a game (albeit in a very small way). The rules were then clarified regarding players betting on games. I don't recall anybody suggesting anything illegal occurred.

I don't see how it could possibly become illegal to bet on something, just because you are in ITK.

Surely it's the same as insider trading?

I bet some give friends a tip off. I'd like to think most see it as a big no no. But when you hear how dodgy some have been you do wonder.

James Coppinger is the one to ask about this. It's what he was convicted of a couple of years ago 'commiting corrupt and fraudulent practices' by using the inside information he had to place bets on horses.

James Coppinger wasn't convicted of anything, the case never even got to the criminal courts

They are, they just aren't allowed to bet on matches they have an influence on

Pretty sure footballs are not allowed to bet on any football matches weather they are involved or not in England as I'm sure a couple of premier players got warned about betting on lower level games

I don't know for certain, but I suspect this would be covered under fraud laws.  If you know who you are going to appoint, then knowingly go place a heavy bet - or appoint the candidate who has the longest odds just to make a quick buck, then I reckon you have defrauded the bookies.  Just an opinion of course.

This is taken off the pfa website

"Put simply the main message for players is: 'You are not allowed to place ANY bet on ANY football, ANYWHERE.'
This covers any match or competition, wherever it is played in the world. It means you cannot bet on scores or results, or any other event that takes place in any match or competition.
It also means you cannot bet on any other football matter, worldwide – for example, who the next manager of a La Liga club will be.
So don’t fall foul of the rules and remember – you cannot place ANY bet on ANY football, ANYWHERE.
Members who would like further clarification on any of the new rule changes, or would like to speak with the PFA in confidence can contact us on:"

And it extends beyond the players too. Much wider catchment than you would imagine.

I recall a club official at Accrington was given a long ban for betting on football.

But it did get in all the national papers.

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/news-and-comment/michael-chopra-and-james-coppinger-found-guilty-in-corruption-investigation-8467399.html

But that doesn't constitute a conviction ;)

Apart from being on the same football pitch as Chopra, Copps had never even spoken to him.

Dickos

I know footballers are not renown for being the sharpest knives, but that PFA article really rubs it in.

"It's very simple. You are not allowed to place ANY bet on ANYTHING football-related. If you want clarification of this, please contact us."
