Nick,

But its the same as any appointment isn't it? You have a criteria, you list those in order of priority and then pick the best applicant from there. Those that meet most of the objectives and score higher than other applicants get offered the job.

Yes, but in most jobs you have an idea of what they're looking for but it is unlikely to be quite so explicit. And it's unusual to have thousands of people interested in the outcome who are given such a detailed list.

I appreciate that the club are trying to engage with fans and show that they are putting a lot of thought into the process, I just fear that with the list of names who are being bandied about most fans will be disappointed and criticise the club for making a poor appointment against their stated criteria. Hopefully it ends up being a name who pleasantly surprised us all.

The criteria will be for show, if they like someone who doesn't follow the criteria they will get the job regardless

I don't know about that. We used to get job specs such that finding a 100% match would be as likely as finding rocking horse manure. Otherwise the candidate would cost far more than the client was willing to pay. Almost all job adverts are a wish list. This one strikes me as no exception.

Anyone outside the process who tries to "mark off" the successful candidate against the original advert is being naïve in the extreme.

there are a large number of fans who will use it as a stick to eat the board with.

Steve Evans would probably try to eat the board as well.

I suspect Dickov got the job because he interviewed well, most bosses will appoint somebody who they think they can work with, isn't too abrasive a character, England seem to do the same that's why you get the safe option.
This is a massive decision, that either moves us forward, or takes us further back, i don't care if the new boss isn't media friendly, Sean wasn't but for the most part did the business on the field, i just hope this decision is the right one for the club as a whole.
