Am sure a few of you are going on the train, if so what time roughly are you catching the train? Starting early in wetherspoons us two, breakfast and a few beers then probably get the train round 11ish.

Getting the closest one to 12 o'clock. Making a stop at the Tap on the way, hopefully.

Getting into Sheff about half 10 is the plan I think, can't beat a day drinking in Sheffield.

Arriving at 11.27 from Newark with mates from village - looking forward to a good day out! Any tips for decent pubs from station to bumhole lane?

THE HOWARD is straight opposite the station. not bad and my (ex student) son says food not bad either, did not kill him in three years. If I am wrong then I apologise on behalf of Sheffield Hallam University 2012 -15

YOu have to start in the Tap.  Right in the station and a more interesting range of beers you will not find.

 :that:

1 You just HAVE to start any trip to or round Sheffield in Sheffield Tap but note you wont get in in Football Colours. This applies to whoever you support. There are Doormen at busy times on any day and they are certain to be there on Saturday

2 Next The Howard in Howard Street as already advertised on earlier post. This is 200 yards away max

3 Next The Globe which is in Howard Street and a further 50 yards uphill opposite The Howard

That's the first 3 if you have no Colours on !

If you are a Real Ale fan here is a useful Map / Link which roughly shows such Pubs between Station and The Ground***. Move the map up/down/left/right and many many decent Pubs including the Wetherspoon ones come into view.

***You will need to click View on Map at the Top centre to get the original view

Cheers donnywolf - you've just given me my travel itinerary! I won't be wearing colours for a change as I suspected most of the decent places would be restricted if I did and I do indeed like my real ales - also not fair to my mates who are coming for day out. I will however have my flag in my pocket ready for arrival at the ground!

There REALLY are some great Pubs in Sheffield and The Tap is one of the best "beer wise". It will probably be full but depending on time of day make your way through to where the Brewery is on view (furthest room from where you come in) and generally it is a bit quieter.

Selection of Beers is second to none. If you have time / inclination and have never been I would take a quick walk Taxi Ride to Kelham Island where you find the Kelham Island Tavern (with separate Brewery and a great little Shop) and The Fat Cat. Both are Sheffield / Real Ale "legends" and Kelham Brewery regularly takes awards at CAMRA Festivals and once scooped the Champion Beer of Britain with "Easy Rider" but I may edit that if I got the wrong one !

Food wise they have Menus and these and other info on their respective Websites !

Here is the Fat Cats Site as a tempter. I may come after all and go Tap Fat Cat and Kelham Island Tavern !

I've been to kelham Island brewery - bought some kegs for my 50th birthday bash, nice stuff! Maybe a bit far out for Saturday and need to make another separate trip for that, but we'll definitely go through to brewery room - not sure it'll be full at 11.30 will it??

I would avoid the Howard and Globe and head for the Rutland instead if you want decent beer.

Agreed. Or Devonshire Cat if you fancy a walk.

The train i'm catching will be early, ridiculously early as i'm an insomniac.

The Rutland does an interesting array of scrumpy in boxes behind the bar, ask the gravity though. Food in there is good. Just up is the Red Lion, also decent beer, In both colours are acceptable as the clientele are football fans often in SUFC colours,I always use those two. If you are mature, adult and dont want to give it "large" and are happy to mix with their fans.... give these a try....
