DS was very lucky after the 'experiment' season in that a certain Corporal Jones had his last hurrah and pulled our club kicking and screaming to the title.

To be fair we didn't stand a chance with Dracula Woods in goal and Barndoor Billy up top! LOL

Pure luck DS!

TBF I did actually believe he was garbage and got lucky - but many thanks to him anyhoo for setting us on the way again by whatever method he did!

Before the season started I told a few Chesterfield supporting mates that they have took a backwards step appointing Saunders, because he has achieved nothing as manager and never will, whilst he was with us he was very, very lucky with the results especially the away ones. The wage bill was massive compared to others in the division and I don't think he will ever be a full time manager in the league again because clubs will have got wise to him . He should stick to the media because like a lot of the " better " players of the last 5 decades they can talk a good game ,but be successful themselves, no

Billy was our top scorer that season.

And before someone says he took a fair amount of penalties, you've still got to score them as well.

Bully Paynter was responsible for what will probably end up being the last in my long line of "Let's go f**king mental" goal celebrations. The winner at Crewe elicited a response from me that I'd prefer the TV cameras hadn't picked up.

Trump that celebration with Jones' 94th minute winner at Stevenage.  That stand was as close to the pitch as I have been for many a year...

Paynter scored how many that season?  11 or 12 maybe?  Nowt against him but we won the league with no one player scoring more than 12 goals if I remember rightly.

FFS I wish I could be lucky as many times over many months as much as some people seem to think he was.

Don't understand the negativity towards Paynter, no world beater but always did a job for us.

Me neither. I rated him, a much better finisher that Browny and Hume.

He was ,but a lot worse in general play...Still he did a good job for us...As for Saunders just for a change I'm going with the minority opinion...Okay whilst he was in charge the football wasn't pretty, but I don't sign up to the lucky away manager theory..He set us up to get the best results he could with the players he had available ,and when he left we were top of the league and I for one am always mystified why that wasn't good enough for the majority of fans tbh....

It wasnt good enough for a lot of fans simply because we were up there and the football was awful, we were bored stiff and it was even worse under dickov, fergies a breath of fresh air and thats why the fans are coming back.
We go to be entertained not to be bored stupid, end of rant !!!!

Is there any evidence to say the fans are coming back so far? Obviously we are all happy with the improvement in form and style under Ferguson and it is much more enjoyable to watch I agree....That said stood in the away end at Brentford for those final minutes provided me with the biggest downer followed by the biggest rush I have ever experienced at a football match and without Saunders that simply wouldn't have happened so worth every minute for me...

What fun you must be to class taking Doncaster Rovers to the top of League 1 as 'achieving nothing'.

If I remember correctly, Saunders left in December so I'm not going to get too excited about this mind-blowing success. Four or five good months isn't enough to overlook the rest of his managerial career, particularly in the Football League, where he has stunk the place out wherever he has turned up.

No. Just running along the gangway at the front of the stand like a Norman Collier chicken on steroids shouting "Get in you f**king big fat Kitson!" repeatedly with a face the colour of the mouth of someone with diphtheria

Superb achievement. Makes three relegations look like a mere blip on an otherwise astonishing record.

Crippy.

Context. It's not as though he took over three healthy clubs and drove them into the ground.

His three relegations were of clubs whose collapse long-preceded his arrival.

Yeah, he didn't save any of them, but it's a bit unfair to blame all the relegations on him.

It's a bit like saying a doctor treating patients with a terminal disease didn't save any of them isn't it?

Came within a gnat's chuff of saving Crawley as well. They looked dead and buried when he came, iirc.

Wolves were doing poorly when he was appointed, but he made no significant difference, other than they actually dropped into the relegation places.

Crawley looked nailed on for relegation when he was appointed but he took it down to the last day of the season.

Anyone who took the Chesterfield job after Cook left was on a hiding to nothing. They had sold most of their better players after punching above their weight last season.

Bit of a mixed bag for me. I think his tactics and soundbites are probably easier to swallow when the team is winning games. However, as Dickov has proved, a manager at Donny will be given a reasonable amount of time. He may well regret jumping ship with us, because he was having success and he would have been given time when things weren't going well.

I honestly think he will look back on that decision as THE turning point in his managerial career, one which he made the wrong decision.

..or he might look at his bank balance and have a different opinion.

Depends what his priorities are, no question what they were at the time.
