Possibly. Depends if you count Steve McLaren winning the Eredivisie in 09/10 as major silverware. Either way it's been a good few seasons.

DBR

Aye. He could get David Icke as the goalkeeping coach an all.

Joe Fagan, 1983-84, was the last English manager to win the European Cup.

No, Redknapp in 08/09 or McLaren in 08/10. Royle's last win was in 94/95.

It's instructive that someone as knowledgable about football as you in struggling to answer these questions.

In actual fact my knowledge of football in general is pretty limited now, although I know where to look things up. Donny Rovers is a different matter though!

And to think at one time I could name all the FA Cup Final winning teams of the 1970s!

Need someone that isn't just going to be a 'Yes' man, someone who commands his team and isn't commanded by them. For me if we go non-English Slaven Bilic is the front runner but if English than Alan Pardew

Whilst I don't believe that the manager is the core of the problem, our inability to produce decent managers who combine flexibility, leadership and intelligence is intimately connected with our failure to produce players with those talents. On both counts, it's because there is no incentive to do so. The big, fat money making machine will continue to spew out its wealth next season. And we'll move on to the next managerial/squad combined failure.

Here's an interesting thought.

When was the last time an English manager won:

a) ANY major silverware?
b) A European title?
c) The Tier 1 title in England?

I'm guessing here,

a & c Howard Wilkinson

B Brian Clough

Steve McClaren

Bedale.

Yes, for a) if you consider the Dutch Eredivisie to be major silverware.

No-one got b) yet? (Which means, last English manager to win European Cup/Champions League, Cup Winners Cup, UEFA Cup or Europa League.)

And while we're at it, here's another one. When was the last time an English club managed by an English manager won a major European title?

Sean Dyche for me. I think he is a better manager than Howe because he's worked within a smaller budget, got the most out of players and has two impressive promotions on his CV.

Yep.

Last English manager to win a major European cup, in 1997/98.

18 years since and no English manager has got close.

Please god NOT Southgate... i'd rather have Pardew or Howe.
Why dont we try something different and give Shearer a go at it, even if its just on a short term deal. The bloke's as passionate as they come and respected throughout the game.

No, No, No!!!!
And, indeed, NO !!
And not bloody Hoddle either. Last managerial job 2006 & all hes done since then is "summarise", by stating the bleeding obvious.

If we are honest with ourselves we all know that Allardyce would do better than the last few managers.

Unlikely to win anything ultimately but would have a consistent team, clear system and would get players playing to potential. May not be pretty and unlikely to win owt, but would be better results and more positive vibe than we have had for some years.

Yes he may be tactically naive and yes he may end up choosing 6"5 full backs but there would at least be something tangible about the England team and performances rather than the structureless, gutless and aimless performances of the last decade and more.

or do you mean the athletico madrid manager

He'd do. Someone from the Mourihno school.

Well, he helped to put us out of the World Cup in France when he writhed about mortally wounded after Beckham flicked at him.
He might as well come and be our manager when we get knocked out of the next World Cup.

What about Barnstoneworth Uniteds Yorkshire Premier Cup winning team :

Haggerty F., HaggertyR., Tompkins, Noble, Carrick, Dobson, Crapper, Dewhurst, McIntyre, Treadmore, Davitt.

All from memory.

For me either of the two mentioned, or the foreign route has to be used again. For me the major problem isn't the manager, it's what he has to work with.
We have built all these fancy facilities, but haven't got the right people, learning the 'learners'. I go back to the dutch method of learning footballers as the best. From a young age the are learned to be comfortable with a ball at their feet.
They don't train the individuality out of them, and are learned all the positions on a pitch. I know they failed to qualify this time, but how many tournaments have they missed?, not many.

The biggest mistake is to totally copy any one system, you take bits from your own system, marry them together with a successful system, then you get the best from both.
Our game has got really snobbish about using a long ball. There is nothing wrong with using it in the right areas and times. You win matches by adapting you're tactics, to the opposition weaknesses, but first you have to be able to pass a ball.
What happened to the high pressing game against iceland?. It could have forced mistakes if it had been used. And can somebody tell me how Rooney got an eight rating in the game, from the sun's opta index ratings?.
