Everton

Have won 3-0 tonight, but the bigger headline should be the fact that they have donated £200k to the Sunderland macot who is fighting cancer, a real class act in my opinion

How much is their minimum PL payment this year? I agree it's well done Everton - who else would have done that? But it's hardly like they've given away anything they're ever going to miss. And it's tax deductible too - so the net cost comes down by 20% anyway.

Come on Bob, you can't knock them for it. Whether it's tax deductible or not it's a welcome gesture!

I'm with bjw on this and I'm sure this might well not be the way you wanted your post to come out.

I remember when I was young getting a 2/6  postal order off a rich relative for my birthday and complaining to my mum about it - she pointed out the error of my ways and made me write a 2 page letter of thanks to them . I soon learnt that it was the thought and not the monetary value of a gift given to me that mattered most.
A thought that is lost on many a grasping youngster these days sadly.

At Mass on Sunday at Moorends RC Church, the gospel was that of the Prodigal Son, The lessons are there, it is not how much you give. It is the thought. that counts, and as children were we all reminded of that when we bought our Mam and Dad a present which was not a lot because we only had pocket money. Respect.

I can see what BobG means but if you spin it round whilst 200000 IS peanuts to Everton it is no doubt a whopping great amount to the beneficiary !

Well done EFC

Where, BJW, did I knock Everton? I read it as saying "it's well done Everton". Did you miss that? The point I was making, which you, and others have clearly missed, is that it is not a gesture which has cost them very much irrespective of how much it means to the recipient. Yes. It's a great thing to do. But if I could get positive widespread national positive publicity for £200K, tax deductible, with the size
budget they clearly must have these days, I would have had a bloody good day indeed. It would have been cheap at double that cost.

Sentiment has nothing to do with decision making.

Cheers

I just don't think this sort of rare generosity, in this day and age, deserved a "but".

Bob you come across as a cynicist and I agree with BJW, there isn't any need for it. Everton didn't need to give £200k to that boy, but they did and the only thing we should take away from it is how good it is for that boy and his family.

Do you view TB and DW's contribution to Rovers similarly?

I think in this case Bob, your  'but'  negates everything else positive

We all know this wont bankrupt Everton  and is excellent PR for them, however they didn't have to do it but they did. I think  this now raises the bar for other cash rich premier league  clubs and will obviously mean the world to the lad and his family.  Sometimes the offer transcends the criticism

Could Everton afford this bob....course they can. Did they have to, no but they did. Good pr yes.  Have Sunderland donated before this. ...who knows. Everton may well donate to Merseyside charities that people do not hear about. I read a lot of what you post bob but your comments on this are a little below the mark about a genuine gesture from what is known as the peoples club
