Hindsight
« on October 22, 2017, 10:17:37 pm by Bentley Bullet »
Just supposing DF refused John Marquis' improved contract demands last summer and the player left. Then his replacement turned out to be not as good - in fact about as good as Marquis himself has been this season -,  how many of us would be blaming our poor form on Fergie allowing Marquis to leave? I reckon a bloody lot of us, and we'd all be wrong, but without hindsight, we would all be convinced that we were right.

With this in mind, it makes me wonder if sometimes fan pressure can influence a manager to go against his better judgement just to pacify them?

I think we, as Doncaster Rovers fans, have one of the lowest influences on their manager, and in fact board, out of all league teams.

I think this shows itself in just how long managers continue poor form before being sacked.

I know the club does a lot to communicate with the fans, but I think they are not swayed by popular opinion like many clubs are.

That's a good thing. Football is very immotive and very short term. Hero to Zero and vice versa

So you don't think fans insistence that the star striker from the season before MUST stay at the club would sway the board of directors who are fearful of a reduction in season ticket sales to meet their demand?

I think it would at many clubs, yes, the majority in fact, but not this club, no.

I haven't seen any convincing evidence that we had bids for Marquis. A few rumours, sure, but nothing concrete. Hindsight, I know, but I think we could have waited till January before sorting out a new deal.

Definitely taking the benefit of hindsight there. This forum was up in arms as the days passed by until the contract was signed! It was the main topic / panic of the summer.

As it happens I don't think people should be overly critical of JM. He's adjusting to a higher level, as are the team. He has 5 goals and it could / should have been more.

There was a mix though Johnathan of fans desperate for him to sign at whatever cost to the clubs and those stating that he wasn't proven at this level.

But no one came in for Marquis he had one year left on his contract so he’d still be with us. Also not sure we could or would have paid enough for a better striker with league 1 or above experience.

Hindsight is a very usefull asset to posess but unfortunatley not many people have it.i agree posters on here was all for giving Marquis what he wanted. My only reservations about this and i have posted before on the subject have the Rovers dug a hole for thereselves in much the same way as Williams was and is a burden on the next seasons budget,Or will Marquis prove to be a div1 player as to a good div2 player

Hindsight would also apply to Mandy and Williams who have equally proved to be as poor as marquis. Williams has injury time as an excuse but I doubt we would have brought in any 1 better anyway?

I wouldn't necessarily disagree that the strikers have all been poor but that begs the question 'why'?  Our problems at both ends of the pitch are due to what doesn't happen in the middle.

I no you say problems at both ends, forgetting Walsall the defence has not been terrible, for me the midfield has been the biggest let down, slow build up slow getting back to defend, no flair and not creating that many chances, marquis might not have been brilliant but has still scored enough that would see him end up on over 15 goals, many were saying we have 1 of the best midfields in this league, in not convinced

Tom Keetley and Clarrie Jordan to name a couple. The old 3rd North was only one tier below the 2nd division, now the Championship. Pedantic but true.

I was only joking Dickos but it depends which way you look at it. Until 1958 the 3rd North and South divisions were the bottom rung but only one level below the old 2nd division. We are one level below now.
I think that if circumstances had been different in 1966 and we had kept hold of Laurie Sheffield both him and Alick could possibly have been on or very near the 20 mark.
