Sat watching the scores as both matches enter injury time Rovers 1-0 down Notts 1-1

then suddenly "what goes around comes around" happens (Oh ye of little faith in rovers ability to score there own late goals eventually) and Rovers again score an equaliser -

and in the other match Notts suddenly becomes 1-2 ( i can see my bank managers smile from here) and Notts have had 2 players sent off and down to 9 men before Crawley scored the pen

little did i know the significance of the post made on here from a few days ago
about a certain Notts County's players official name after all what's in a name

talking of names there is a player liverpool trainee called
Matthew Virtue-Thick on loan at Notts COunty

seriously
https://www.transfermarkt.com/matthew-virtue-thick/profil/spieler/279458

bbc had him down as the hyphenated name originally for some strange reason the second part of his name has been removed by the bbc amongst others -- perhaps they forgot it bit "thick"  ?

still there on the above link

ironically Matthew Virtue-Thick got 2 yellow cards and got sent off   ....  it seems the Notts County goalkeeper in the absence of "Virtue-Thick"  decided to act "real thick" and with the ball in his hands acts "Really-thick" and kicks a Crawley player .. the ref spots it and gives a penalty .. never seen anything like it

so we have "VIRTUEL thick" and "really thick" :scarf: :scarf:

Didn't Sulli kick out at or trip an opponent whilst holding the ball at the KM once, gave away a penalty?

Tommy Mooney of Walsall was the player, 3-2 defeat in the promotion season.

At the game last night when they had the pen appeal against Lawlor in the first half a bloke near me said that it had been given, Lawlor would have been sent off as well.
I explained to him that it wasn’t necessarily the case now due to the rule change, double jeopardy and all that, but I got the feeling that he didn’t think I was right.
If he sees this about the Notts keeper he will probably be convinced that I was wrong but my thoughts on this is that the keeper kicking out at the opponents player was deemed as serious foul play, which of course is a red card.

I'm not sure of the exact wording of the rule but I think it's that it isn't an automatic red card for the keeper. I'm fairly sure the referee can still decide to send him off if deemed appropriate (such as in your case of serious foul play).

There was a case recently which I saw on the telly.
A keeper gave away a pen, thus denying a goal scoring opportunity and was red carded by the ref.
There was the usual clamour around the ref by the defending team players but instead of disputing the pen (which was clear cut anyway) they were reminding the ref that it wasn’t a red card offence under the new rules.
The red changed his decision and the keeper stayed on the pitch.

Here is my take on it.  A foul in the penalty area that denies an obvious goalscoring opportunity is NOT a red card offence if the player committing the foul did so in an attempt to play the ball.  So a mistimed tackle, a keeper getting hand to the man just before the ball, is a yellow card.  A DOGSO foul not attempting to play the ball, ie a shirt pull or a push, or a handball etc, is still a red card.

Any other offence that is a red card anyway, ie violent conduct etc is still a red in the penalty area.

Agreed. However, if a player "chances it" in anyway and doesn't get sent off and then the penalty is missed then the opposition don't benefit whatsoever.

Suarez for Uruguay in the 2014 WC, despite being sent off for deliberate handball, was justified in doing what he did because Ghana missed the resultant penalty and Uruguay ended up progressing.

I did what Suarez did, once, playing for my primary school u-11 side..  Our opponents had just scored direct from a corner - the ref, their teacher, says "don't worry boys he won't do that again.."

Sure enough, 5 minutes later, there's another corner.  Ball over my head, too high to head but going in (full size goals) so i fingertip it over the crossbar.  They scored the penalty anyway, but my coach said I had done the right thing.  Not a sending off in those days..  It was a cracking save too!
