Sunderland in the League
« on October 21, 2018, 02:04:50 pm by Branton Rover »
I was asked a question by a mate who said when was the last time we played Sunderland in the league - I said I wasn’t sure but I thought maybe in the 30’s - can anyone tell me definitively? Cheers

Lost 3-1 at Rover Park on Boxing day. Home game lost in April I think may be 2-0 not 100% sure.

Been informed we’ve only ever beaten them once back in ages the 50’s an FA Cup match at Roker Park

Beat them last season in the Football League Trophy, if you want to count that.

We have only ever played them four times in history and honours even thus far.

That was their Under-21s so not the same thing. IIRC Cliff Byrne was in charge of them.

Went to both games that season 87-88, lost at home 2-0 very early in the season and yes lost new years day 3-1 after taking the lead in the 2nd min with a Steve Burke free kick i think!! Stand to be corrected on that.

I went to Roker Park. Horrible day. Eric Gates blatantly handballed for one of their goals. Ref was as big a homer as I’ve ever seen. And then the Kettlewell’s bus broke down after the game and we had to wait f**king ages for it to be fixed. Happy bas**rd New Year.

I'm going 3 minutes. Got back to the buses and the tyres had been let down/ slashed. Got home at about 11.Burke was sent off the following day as we let a 3-1 lead slip,to lose 4-3 at home to Wigan. Happy days!

You beat me to it PDX. Was it a genuine breakdown and not sabotage by the locals?

Is that due to one of their fans having a dump in the seats last season?

I missed the match on New Years Day , mega hangover after going out on New Eve ,spent the day trying to follow the match on teletext in the pub whilst downing another gallon of Stones . It was a very fragrant afternoon
