I said to my lad at the time, the fact he was holding his face made it obvious it hit his hand!
Thought exactly the same and I was in the west stand near the Palace fans

They’re given all the time for situations like this. Handball is another rule similar to offside where nobody knows the actual rule, as there’s no consistency in decisions
the rules are simple if you know them

I’m sure all refs know the rules but they don’t all come to the same decisions

The incident was right in front of us in the South and it was easy to see it wasn't a penalty. Good job Mike Dean has the same good view, like you say, as other refs might have given it.

It was ball to hand, not hand to ball. His hand was in a natural position for his slide. No penalty for me.

COYR

would you say the oldham penno wasnt a penno then its natural for arms to be raised when jumping for a high ball is it not??

His arm wasnt in a natural position if it was there would have been a lot more arms up touching the ball

From a conservation of momentum point of view, it's nigh on impossible to throw yourself into a sliding tackle without an arm going above your head.

Look at these.

Mind, I'd have been screaming for a penalty at the other end, but it's not a clear cut one either way.

By the way, Danny Murphy, the...ahhh...expert summariser paid for by the BBC licence fee yesterday queried why Downing's arm was in such an unnatural position.

So his expertise clearly isn't in explaining the finer points of slide tackles then.

Got me thinking back to the World Cup.

On the extended highlights on another thread, on a different attack, Batshuayi cuts back onto his right foot and tries a shot which Marko saves easily.
As he turns back, Downing slides in to block what he was expecting to be a left foot shot.
As he slides he again puts his arm out on the ground behind him.
It is a perfectly natural body movement and players do it all the time.

Very poor defending that was, shouldn’t be committing yourself like that
