Time For A Rule Change
« on June 22, 2019, 11:51:57 am by Donnybob »
Well, the milk is spilt, the cat among the pidgeons and any other cliche you care to quote. What's done is done. A sour taste, dreams dashed, potentially catastrophic implications. So what can be learned from this, not just for DRFC but the whole of football?

There are two strategic periods in each season when clubs make decisions that define ambition. The two transfer windows, but principally the summer one.

Budgets are set, though it's not like shopping in a supermarket. Players often have to be shifted out before they are replaced. It's a juggling act and the worst possible scenario is for a club to clear out the old and then lose their manager whilst the squad is threadbare and the clock ticking.

Would it not make perfect sense to have a reverse window in which teams cannot poach currently employed managers whilst the player transfer window is open?

Indeed, if a manager is employed by a club on the opening day of the window he cannot leave to join or be involved with another club until 28 days after it closes?

This would certainly change how chairmen selfishly hire and fire with no regard to other club's strategy or supporters. Be in no doubt, the timing of what Hull has done to us, for example, could potentially result in our relegation.

We could just build some protection into a contract buying instilling a massive buy out clause during transfer windows

Good luck with that!

Doom and Gloom Already! We’ve not even kicked a ball!

Yes agree manager timing is catastrophic.

But nobody is bigger than this club, let’s pull together. Get behind new manager and prove everybody wrong one more time and stop talking about relegation.

Games come thick and fast in August and we’re gonna need to be behind the team, so we don’t regret come end of season.

OK there’s no stability from coaching standpoint but maybe us the fans can provide stability for the club  in our unwavering positive approach and support ?

Not doom and gloom. The opening paragraph clearly states lessons for the whole of football and invites discussion on the proposition. Reference to potential relegation is purely worst case scenario for all teams affected in the same way.

As for the damaging consequences at this stage of the window (to us), 8 first team players have left, potentially two more, two new signings told porky pies by McCann, doubts now cast over other planned loans and pipeline signings and probably a couple of weeks or more before a new manager is installed means a last minute scramble to cobble together a team. In anyone's view that's a perilous position to contend with. But please, there are dozens of threads on the impact, why not focus on the primary purpose of this post here - time for a rule change?

However that’s the worst scenario , but the best case scenario it could also bring the players who are left at the club closer together to give them confidence/ desire to go on and have a strong season.

Fair point, I think a rule change would be very helpful and bring more fairness to the game.

I agree it would make more sense to protect clubs that way, maybe I’m a cynic but I just think that the FA/ EFL/ Premier league. They want the drama off the field, they love us talking about and clicking on every football website going, they love the drama in the media as they want as many people as possible, clicking and talking about the drama. As they think it’s more likely to get you to part with your cash, to go see the new manager at a game, to go to the hull friendly, or pay for your sky’s subscription to watch the games etc etc etc .

How is that going to work?

Any manager who is INTERESTED in a move would have to resign on the last day of the season just in case Real Madrid/Chelsea/Hull City fancied them? Nearly all of them would fancy working at a higher level, so nearly ever club would be after a new manager.

McCann behaved poorly and broke his contract, you don't change laws for that. You make sure you get appropriate compensation under the exisiting one and move on.

If at the start of a transfer window you are going to buy/ sell players on behalf of a club using the funds of the board and fans then you see it through to the end, plus 28 days. After that you basically leave the team set up for the season ahead, with or without you.

I like the idea.
We are now at a major disadvantage to most of our competitors this season due to one mans complete disregard for us.

Personally I’d like to see the January window binned. Get all the business completed by the start of the season.  If unfortunately a team suffer loads of injuries it would enable youth players and second string players to come through.
It would be tough if you were doing well and it all went wrong but great if you managed your team correctly

I’d also (I know it’s impractical) like to see the transfer windows include managers. If you appoint a sxxt manager unlucky

ye I agree the principle but it must be overarched by anti greed and in football the Premiership bubble has to burst first.

If he'd left after the play-offs or after the summer's business was completed, in and out, we'd have been miffed but in a much stronger position for the coming season.

Having cleared out the old squad with the exception of 2 players that he may even come back for, we are now in limbo. It would be wrong to recruit before a new manager is appointed so effectively were frozen in time whilst potential replacement players slip through our fingers. All this in a season when the window closes earlier than usual.

Don't blame him for leaving. It's a great opportunity even if fraught with risks. But the timing is disastrous and the rules should protect clubs and fans from this happening.
