Pompey offered him a 3 year contract and they could be in the Championship next season. Surely Rovers could have offered a similar deal a month ago if they had equal confidence in him, but chose not to.

It's not us. We're not the issue here.

Did you offer a deal he couldn't refuse?

Yep, that's the way to go, for sure.

What is the issue then ?

If it's not us, who do you think it is?

He'll get a good round of applause from me next time he rocks up at the KM for all his goals and commitment to the cause.

Once the game kicks off, he should get dogs abuse and I personally hope he barely gets a kick.

Joe Wright takes him out in his first tackle when he plays against us and out for rest of the season or maybe whoever’s Pompeys first game

Is there an issue at all? Our most highly sought-after player has left to play for a bigger team. Most of us expected him to go after the end of last season, it's just taken most of the summer to materialise as Rovers stuck to their guns and demanded a good fee.

Still time for us to use the money to bolster our squad and give it another go. 46 games still to play, meaning it quite literally is all to play for.

Good luck to Marquis, top player for Rovers, good business for Rovers! if the fee is anything near that rumoured.
We’d have had to have invested a lot more money to keep John in wages and incentives and at his age, there’s less chance of getting any money back resale on him. Invest in 2/3 hot prospects and maybe we might hit the jackpot, onwards and upwards.

Good luck to John he worked his socks while he was here, where is the proof yet that we were bringing in better players to make our attempt on promotion again. What ever was said will be said the money obtained must be used to bring in several players of better quality if we are to be near a promotion spot. So we’ve lost Grant because he was ambitious we’ve lost John because he wanted be closer to his family and he must believe Portsmouth can give him Championship football.
So it’s up to the club to use this money to show ours aims of promotion are not just words but actions the next few days and weeks we will see what players we bring in and we’ve needed them all summer.

Maybe the £2m is a “Loan”

his previous loan spell at Portsmouth seems to have airbrushed  out of history

Sometimes women rule the world - his wife is pregnant by the way - fee  just under £ 2 million

I think this is why we get all the conspiracy theorists. I think most assume there isn't an issue, but then we get those in the know saying that there was some kind of issue, but not saying what it is. So naturally people will speculate.

Conspiracy or not it was said we had a list of exciting players to chose from. Experienced players were allowed to leave because we didn’t want to match their demands. No bids had come in for John Marquis. Brought in two fullbacks and before Grant left an  unknown in Gomes that Grant never talked about. We still had a list of exciting players that we wouldn’t miss Herbie Kane. Appointed a fans favourite in DM he was given time to look at players. Still John Marquis was here and no bids therefore apart from two loans we couldn’t bring any exciting players in off the list or by now had they gone with the previous manager. Having had a straw pole on where the team would finish 4th was one reply still no exciting players. We bring in experienced trialists  but even into the week were decisions were going to be made still no exciting players. John Marquis leaves to a promotion rival we receive a transfer fee of some amount. He left but there appears to be an issue, still no exciting players. So after all that we are sat here with two days before the kick off having got the money we’ve been waiting for all summer to try and fulfill the ambition of promotion. So will we sign any exciting players no conspiracy only the people who think they know something are putting down the people who know nothing.

Now it’s down to DM and GB to get players so we can try for promotion if we don’t the blame will be pointed elsewhere like all ways.

Trust you to misread a post Steve. If anybody can you can.

I was responding to somebody who said that 'we', as a club should have matched the contract that Pompey offered JM. In other words a 3 year contract and a much higher salary if we had the same confidence in him and yet chose not to.

I just stated that it wasn't us that stopped that from happening, we weren't the issue. It was John's decision to leave, we had no choice in the matter.

So, no conspiracy, nobody 'in the know' making out there was one, just somebody saying the blame for not offering a 3 year contract didn't lie with the club. It is that simple.

If anyone at the club & I mean anyone, didn’t think Marquis would be leaving for pastures new before the start of the season (& yes I know it’s only two days away), then they’ve had their heads in the sand.

If DM does not have a plan already in place to sign or loan a target man before we play Rochdale away then I’ll be very, very disappointed given all that Gavin Baldwin has said about DM’s contacts in the game & that infamous little black book he showed up with at his interview which GB almost salivated over.

And SM with his privileged ‘inside knowledge’ assuring us “we won’t be needing Herbie Kane”, well that comment led me to believe DM had quality players queuing up to wear a Rovers shirt.

I haven’t a clue who will lead the line on Saturday, I sincerely hope DM does.

I think Marquis deserves respect. He’s worked his socks off in his three years here and scored lots of goals. He could’ve run his contract down and left for nothing, he could have kicked up a public fuss to force a move. He hasn’t done either of those things. He leaves with my respect and well wishes.

We need to move on and hopefully we will now strengthen the wider team and squad in the way it desperately needs.

I seem to always be saying the same thing after a Jonathon post

Good common sense point of view - you are wasted on here lol  :scarf:
