Perhaps. 4 in 14 at international level is not bad mind and he did get on the pitch a few times during Italia 90. Suspect he is probably happy enough with that international record (if not his first touch).

David Nugent and Francis Jeffers both have a goal a game scoring record at international level, doesn’t mean they were ever good enough to be there.

Steve Bull is before my time but my dad has similar views to BST - a lovey story but ultimately out of his depth.

They only played a friendly game a piece! Bull played a dozen times including in a World Cup finals. I would be proud of that record. Not every international player has to be the most technically gifted - Stiles, Delph, Reid all had excellent international careers despite being very workmanlike.

I think you have a low bar for “excellent” international careers. Stiles won a World Cup so I’ll grant you that one but Reid didn’t play much for England and nor has Delph (injuries haven’t helped him, admittedly).

Steve Bull scored 4 goals for England which is an fine record for someone of his ability and one he should be proud of, but it’s not an excellent international career. His last appearance for England was at the age of 25 which says it all really.

Reid and Delph both played at a World Cup finals. Stiles as you note won the World Cup. My point being that limited players can still have a decent international career and it is hard to dispute that Bull didn’t have a decent crack.
