What do our coaches see during games?
« on November 02, 2019, 05:22:45 pm by Filo »
Today from the start every time Dieng had the ball Burton would push 4 men up on Whiteman and Sheif first half and whiteman and Gomes second half, that resulted in us giving the ball away almost every time, we did nothing to combat that all game and came away lucky to get a point

Very lucky, Filo.

He subbed easily the best player off, in Taylor, who looked very sharp.

The rest were average to poor.

Copps was our best player.

I recall West Brom fans saying that one of the big flaws of Moore’s reign there was the insistence on playing it out from the back with limited players. When it works it’s great - the first goal against Bristol Rovers being a prime example of how it can pull teams out of position - but there’s room for pragmatism. Seems to be a bit of a blind spot with DM right now.

Agreed, Taylor was lively, and Dieng wants a good talkingto regarding the suicide passes

Joe Wright if he’s on the bench should have featured as we looked shell shocked every-time they came in our box and Joe  is a level headed player  . Daniels was the worst , he just kept looking backwards instead of putting foot through the ball .

Daniels has done a good job since he came on board. Does have a mistake in him though.

As all players do.
He had a decent game today and certainly ripped into Dieng for the suicide pass that led to their pen.

I thought that was Daniels worst game for us
I couldn’t believe we persisted in taking goal kicks like that, also still can’t believe we have 11 players back when defending corners - we got out of jail today

And we either lost the ball when we got it to halfway or resorted to a long hoof upfield under pressure by Anderson.

I hate it when we play like this just sticking to something that’s not working. I understand the coaching side that you have to believe and be confident in the way of playing no matter what but personally I think that players should see when it’s not working and change the game. Especially early on when they are up for it and fit we’ve the option of Thomas in the air so if they push 4 up to press just take them out the game and go over them!

I thought it was odd we persisted with a tactic that wasnt working. Also wondered why alfie May was brought on so late.

We didnt play fluent football. Part of that was Burton who were decent.  Hut some of it was just that it didnt really work today.

I thought Thomas put a big shift in and did excellent with what he had.

Wright is the better central defender for me, and him not being left footed does not detract from the fact he and Anderson have played well together in the past.
Hound, it is not the first time Daniels has turned blind in the box like he did today, he did it in an earlier game last month and got away with it, when the opposition were screaming for a pen, today he didn't get away with it, he compounded a poor pass from the keeper by taking a touch in the area and being too slow.
Wright for me every time, and let Luton improve their own player, we are in danger of losing Wright if he is ignored. Daniels should be his cover, not the other way round.

I hope it was more a element of sticking with our proven league side, which has done well, than that DM rates Daniels higher than Wright. Daniels has been good so no reason to outright drop him. However now Wright has had plenty of time to prove fitness and play a few games i'd be starting him next match for sure.

Yes, Daniels hasn't done much wrong up to now and even started today in confident fashion. Only when he played a part in one of our early disasters that he got a rollocking from Whiteman which seemed to hit his confidence but he was hung out to dry by Dieng pass, and just like a pantomimes audience shouting “He's behind you" it was too late and the deed was done.

Way too early to be on his back and let's be fair, Joe Wright isn't devoid of the odd calamity either. It happens in football!

DM isn't going to change our style and said as much in his post match interview, we will continue to pkay it out from the back more often than not.

The “gerrit forrard” lads near me were going ballistic today and I think some of them will explode soon because they are going to have to get used to us playing out from the back that is the way the gaffer wants us to do it.

It would have been nice if we had broken forward with any pace, our trouble was we looked pedestrian when we won the ball. It was as if we were playing a training game, allowing the opposition to get in place before we went to try and score, there was hardly any break-away attacking action by Rovers, it isn't as if we don't have the pace in the team to do it.

But just maybe sometimes you have to put your hands up and say 'they were better than us' and they were. Burton were by far the best side I've seen us play this season and if they'd had a striker we'd have been well beat.
Obviously not helped by the fact that there was no plan B when they closed us down so high in our own half. If other teams watch us and do the same we have to have an alternative to giving it to players in our own 18 yard box
