A You Tube clip
« on December 13, 2019, 08:35:32 pm by Branton Rover »
Saw by accident the other day DRFC versus Wigan Athletic, Belle Cue circa 1996. This was a significant game in so many ways - it came straight after in answer to my question at the Park Hotel on who was picking the team, he stated Richardson and after the furore had settled we asked why Paul Birch wasn’t playing he said he would approach Uncle Ken to ask if Birchy could be restored to the team - he was and played magnificently pulling the midfield strings and orchestrating the win - was also great to see Darren Moore, Colin Cramb, Adie Mike & Dean Williams in the same side.

If someone clever could provide the link so that we can all see the clip be grateful

Some good players in that team if only Richardson could leave the manager to it instead he went insane & thought he was the next Brian Clough

Great to see these old clips but it just highlights how much the game has progressed in relative terms 🧐

There weren't many black refs then and not many now

I’d forgotten how loyal Adie Mike was and how much he at times carried the team along with Lee Warren. Adie was a really nice guy too

Graeme Jones was playing for Wigan as was Roberto Martinez (who was both booked and subbed).

Liked that. If I recall, was that the bit of a purple patch that kept us up that year?

Players were more prepared to carry the ball in the attacking half dribble and jink, and get a shot off where as now there's more emphasis on one touch pass. Only Copps really plays that way and maybe Taylor when he's confident. Herbie Kane fits the bill too. There's nothing better than seeing players take men on and outwit them. It's a dying art.

Think I also saw Ian Clark, Martin Macdonald in the clip, possibly with a bit of Simon Ireland although my memory isn’t what it used to be

Thank you BB. That's treasure that is.

Who was our goalie? I have no idea. Cracking save at about 4 minutes.

Our squad for the season
https://www.11v11.com/teams/doncaster-rovers/tab/players/season/1997/

Keeper was probably Dean Williams but definitely “Dennis”

Anyone remember Deano being assaulted with a pie from a Monkey hanger

I remember that, it was when there were gaps in the wall surrounding the pitch, if I remember rightly the bloke wasn’t from Hartlepool, but somewhere like Dewsbury

That was the first season when I really started to go regularly to BV after probably doing 10 or so games a season since 1990. Rovers dished out loads of free tickets to schools that season and we seemed to have quite a few Friday night games and despite finishing lower mid table (IIRC) we seemed to have some decent results and entertaining games. I continued to attend quite a few games the following season and enjoyed it so much I got my first season ticket for the 97/98 season which was alos fairly memorable!

I have a framed & signed (not by all) squad photo from that era, Kerry Dixon manager and big Darren in the squad. Anyone interested in it? I’m decluttering and it needs a good home. No charge ....I’ll pay postage but maybe a donation to a charity of your choice? I’ll post a picture on here if anyone’s interested.
