IF we made the Play-Offs
« on February 06, 2020, 10:53:12 pm by andysly »
If we got into positions 3 to 6, would we have a realistic chance of getting through based on what we've seen so far this season.
Likely opponents
Rotherham - Look good for automatics now they've got their home form sorted. I'm not sure I'd fancy us in the final, but over 2 legs maybe.
Portsmouth - Decent recent history against them, again I'd take us in a one off, but not in the semi's.
Coventry - Good side who nullified us at home, would take good performances to get past them at any stage
Sunderland - the recent draw apart we've not turned up against them, I think the draw would give us the confidence to turn them over
Oxford - gave us a hiding at theirs, and were unlucky to lose at the Keepmoat, tough games if we played them
Ipswich - not seen them but seem prone to home draws
Wycombe - can't see them staying in the top 6 too much longer, we'd beat them comfortably
Peterborough - another side we have a good record against, and I think it'd continue in the PO's
Burton - Tricky team always liable to get a result against arguably better teams, though unlikely to get in top 6
Fleetwood - Unlikely to get in the top 6 but we'd put them away over 2 legs

I don’t think we will make automatics but looking at that list I don’t feel that any of them need to fear any of them.
It would be a real lottery. Rivers need not fear any of them and likewise none of the others need to fear each other
None of them are outstanding.  It would be who turns up on the day.

I think that arguably we will gain momentum as the new lads blend in more. We now have a bit of strength in depth and of we go on a roll I don't think any of the other sides would fancy playing us. There doesn't seem a great difference between the sides in the play off positions but form, luck and confidence can and does change.
Play the games and see where everybody is placed in a month or so.

Play offs anything can happen, same as teams we have already played and now with 4 or 5 diff players in the team could be completely different, also take last season games I didn’t think we had a chance against Charlton over two games but went right down to the wire

It’s 2/3 games and it’s a lottery. Who turns up, bit of luck or a refereeing decision for or against.

Our record is good. Last year was the 1st time we didn’t win the play offs.

The penalty shot out at the other end did it. Tommy Rowe was furious about it and lost his composure & that set the tone in the shoot out.

Just my opinion.

Would love to beat Rotherham in the final this year. LOVE IT.

what i like so far in the interviews ive heard from the new lads is that is all about "We" and "the team", i think fey described us as "we" before he'd even kicked a ball... DM seems outstanding at developing a tight knitted dressing room mentality!!

Im sure after SOD had been here 2 or 3 years, he still referred to us as Doncaster lol....

Never mind the play offs, we are only 6 points off second place with a game in hand. Second place is more than attainable if we go on a decent run of wins.

I think if we think about the playoffs the final would be played on fantasy Island let's just see what happens and not jump 10 steps ahead

Amen to that ( no pun intended)

It's great to dream but along way to go yet. All those above us will be having very similar thoughts so nothing is guaranteed yet

2nd place is way beyond our grasp.

We might only be 6 points behind with a game in hand but the fact is that we are 9th in the points per game table. We'd have to climb over 7 sides in the last 16 games to make 2nd place. I'd reckon we'd need something like 40 points from the last 48.

It's not going to happen.

The playoffs are very much in play though.

I think we will make the play offs and go out at the first hurdle....
Too soon for the next step in my opinion...and it’s only my opinion , not my desire!

It always makes me wonder why people forget that other teams also have games in hand too.
In fact, three of the teams above us have a game in hand over us.

There are two Tuesdays in February when there are several games taking place when we are not playing. We should all be relatively even come end of the month.

If we win our next two which were favourites to do then I think we’d be in there with a chance of top 2. Just over 2 points per game over the last 14 games would leave us around the 81 point mark.

Being realistic though, 2ppg from now to the end of the season would be a tough ask anyway even including if we win the next two.
So 2ppg from now would get us to 76 points.
Rotherham need only 1.5ppg to hit that target so they are probably not going to be catchable by us.
That really only leaves one other automatic promotion place available and there are about eight clubs chasing it.

I agree it’ll be tough
But that’s got to be the target, I think since Boxing Day we’re averaging around that mark so no reason why we can’t carry that form on

Three points today first, then see what the next game brings..

Every time we win one game, the average points per game achieved goes up, even if only by a fraction.

Yes, I agree the 2ppg is doable but my point is that unless Rotherham collapse, then they have probably got one of the auto places sewn up so there is realistically only one other auto place available.
As you say, it has to be a target but play off is more likely than auto promo.
As IDM says all the time, one game at a time.

Yes, after last nights result it looks like Rotherham's to lose now although it pains me to say it. They have a formula that works in this division which may not be as pleasing on the eye as us but it's effective. They can afford the odd slip up now and again but they have enough to secure one of the automatic spots.

Let's just see where we are at the end of this month. I'm hoping we'll be closer but will it be close enough.

As I keep saying the last 10 games, 30 points at stake, will sort it out the men from the boys.
We've been weak finishers in recent seasons, even making a dogs breakfast of a title run in which should have been in the bag, so I'm really hoping the opposite applies this season.

Think we would need more than 81 points to get top 2.
It could happen but it is very rare indeed.

We won the league on 2013 with 84 points, from 46 games.. 44 games this season.

Hey guys I am one of the most optimistic and positive on here even if i say it myself.
Some of us though are getting way ahead of ourselves.

I love the positivity after all the negativity we were getting only 2 weeks ago before the new recruits arrived.

But top 2 we would have to be so consistent in last 16 games it would be an unbelievable achievement. Personally I think we would need 40/41 points more to achieve that.
Now i could be very wrong & we may need less but we could also need more.

40 more points would mean 12 wins & 4 draws or 13 wins and 1 draw & 2 defeats
So let’s be realistic and dream of Wembley and beating Peterborough or anyone else in the final.
Preference Posh or the Millers. Think The latter will get auto promotion as much as it pains me to say so.

ONE GAME AT A TIME FOLKS. Feet on the floor time.

If we lose today there will be 50% of the posts saying we have no chance of the play offs. It will be carnage on here again.

Dream we can but that’s it. The players need to do the talking on the pitch.
What we say is irrelevant. Even if it’s good fun.  :)
