Statement by Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Gishela Stuart - Vote Leave to Cut VAT on Fuel

And fuel bills will be lower for everyone.

In 1993, VAT on household energy bills was imposed. This makes gas and electricity much more expensive. EU rules mean we cannot take VAT off those bills.

The least wealthy are hit particularly hard. The poorest households spend three times more of their income on household energy bills than the richest households spend. As long as we are in the EU, we are not allowed to cut this tax.

When we Vote Leave, we will be able to scrap this unfair and damaging tax. It isn’t right that unelected bureaucrats in Brussels impose taxes on the poorest and elected British politicians can do nothing.

Unless I missed this in the budget - yoose been had! Again.

As much as I strongly disagree with a lot of Brexit and the false promises before the referendum, isn’t this one of the EU rules we have to abide by until the end of this year.?  Maybe the government will use this as something next year to soften the blow of other effects of Brexit that will manifest next January.?

Similar to Tampon Tax - but they announced that

Probably you are right in that they will save it for a bad news day as most Politicians like to do

Anybody would think that it wasn't the Conservatives (ie British politicians, not the EU) that threw away our zero-rating for VAT on domestic fuel and intended to impose it at standard rate.
