London Away Day plan
« on January 22, 2021, 10:13:04 pm by moses »
Given we are playing West Ham away to tomorrow.
What would have been your ideal London away trip plan.

My lad is 13, he loves going to London, going on the tube and plans the trip now.

So ours is
Kings Cross
The Dolphin
Random Wetherspoons
Match
The Dolphin for a game of card with locals
McDonalds for way home
Train home

I just jump on the tube.

Meet up with the local QPR, Spurs, Watford and Wycombe supporters on the way back in The Queens Head. I am viewed as a very strange supporter but the atmosphere is jovial.

I have been in the Stadium before but that was an athletics meeting.

 A magnificent stadium.

Drive down to the hotel and dump the car, possibly the Aloft by the Excel. Tube to west India quays,  stop at the spoons for some Lunch and A pint. Tube over to pudding mill Lane, surrounded by all the locals..  Heads down,    watch the game,   fantastic stadium, don't know what the locals keep banging on about.   After the game,  tube to North Greenwich, stop at the o2 for some tea. My lad loves the Mexican just outside. Get Back to the digs,  quick swim before match of the day, to relive our victory in all its glory , wake up Sunday, a bit of touristy stuff, deffo Camden Market,. Then a steady drive back up north.... Sorted!!?

Agree about the stadium. We were at the 2017 World Athletics Championships - it’s a fantastic structure. Just sorry we can’t be there tomorrow

Would have been a truly great day!
Start in our local by the station The Railway Bell and 3 stops on the tube to Stratford. My lads grew up in East London and are big West ham fans first but Rovers very close second. They were dragged around by me to little conference grounds as nippers but hard to keep em when theres a big club just a couple of miles up the road and Donnys 160 miles north.
They wont mind losing tomorrow to the red and white though...

Anything but Weatherspoons, me and my mates find a local brew pub and sample the beers, if not a brew pub then a real ale pub with local beers

I think it would have to be a two mile stomp to & from the Hackney Church Brew Company for me.

It would usually be the train down there and a tour of Cask Marque approved hostelries before and after the game, (had a great day for the 2012 fixture at Upton Park).
Now though it would still be the train down but with a very excited 12 year old Grandson, maybe a pub stop somewhere neutral and a pint at the ground too.
He's is so disappointed to have missed this opportunity to go to somewhere like the Olympic Stadium, hopefully there'll be some bigger clubs to play next season as well.....in the Championship.

There was a brew pub just inside the Westfield centre, at the entrance next door to the premier inn

surely a spoons in a good option when it comes to ales, they normally have a great selection..  Plus loads of different weekly guest ales?

Drive down to London.
Find a train station to park the car.
Tube/overground to a pub for some snap.
Game.
Kids to McDonald's to shut them up about tea.
Home.

A1 or M1  :rtid:

With the advent of not so smart motorways, I always feel safer on the A1.

no brainer, A1 as its East London,   its practically one straight road till you are 2 miles from the docklands for a hotel, then it's tube all the way.. Any more Wembley visits, and that's a different matter....

I think Club Doncaster need to buy some shares in Wetherspoons once they reopen. We'd have Josh Simms on a permanent transfer!

Early train down then tube over to the east end. Meet up with a couple of West Ham mates from England away trips. Complete check that we or the boys are not showing any colours and make our way to a Social Club packed wall to wall with Hammers fans. A few pints and some snap and it’s not long before our accents are clocked but we are with Big Rod so all is well. Make our way to the ground and depending on the result, either make our way back to the club to have our backs patted on a brave but fruitless result or if we’ve sneaked a win head straight back to the West End taking no chances that someone doesn’t get upset when we say “ Heyup luv, Can we have foower bitters please, anda shandi fo Big Rod”?

All West Ham fans.

Wake up this morning.

Poison home fans breakfast with some form of laxative.

Travel to stadium on tube.

Deny all knowledge and blame cousins dodgy cooking while stating Yorkshire stomach’s can deal with it better than Southern Softies.

Tube back to there house.

Gloat all evening following our comfortable win.

Hope they all feel better.

Slightly different angle but something I'll share .

We've drawn West Ham away quite a few times since the 80's the vast majority in the league cup but we were pulled out of the hat two years running in the FA cup a decade ago .

The first time I went or should I say attempt was in 1980 for a midweek league cup tie , West Ham had a good side even though they were in the second division and had won the previous season's FA cup , Lampard senior , Billy Bonds , Phil Parkes , Alvin Martin , Trevor Brooking , Alan Devonshire , Stuart Pearson , David Cross and Paul Allen and we were a third division side under Norman Hunter although we were promoted to the second division at the end of that season .

As was the times we set off on a coach organised by Kexborough club and 53 lads brought plenty to drink on the way down , plenty been the operative word .

All was well until we reached London , the driver hadn't a clue where West Ham was which became clear as we ended up completely lost with KO time approaching .

At 8.30pm and half time at Upton Park we were still completely lost , the driver as you can imagine was getting pelters and intimidated which seemed to make the situation for him far worse .

It was decided to find a boozer and at least rescue something from this disaster .

53 well oiled Tykes walked in to a pub somewhere in East London !!!!!!

Before too long the lads were on the tables and the sing song began , it was getting rather boisterous to say the least .

Football fans pyssed up in 1980 by reputation wouldn't have been great for most mine hosts .

The Met turned up , lots of them , in fact as we were ordered to leave and found ourselves on the street there was a good number of them , flashing lights the whole works .

We will escort you back to the M1 said the plod in charge , it was possibly the best news our so called driver had had all day given he probably hadn't a clue how to navigate us back to Staples Corner .

Some wag asked a constable if he knew the score " 3-1 hammers it finished " , with a smug smile on his boat race .

Great day !!!!!

Pick cheapest available train ticket both there and back. End up paying 5-6 quid a pint all day. Had too many cans and getting annoyed the london underground has no toilets all over. In recent years see us win much more than.
