League of his Own Patreon

Paid my fiver for this and what great value it is based on the insights (so far I've listen to Billy, Greenie and Wellens) - great to hear some insights into that era with Sean O'Driscoll (and the relative shock to the system of soundbite Saunders and Dickov who just sounded clueless)

Interesting to hear (the confirmation) that Sharp clashed with SoD and valued to win at all costs, but conversely Wellens actually agreed and carried forward the mantra that performance is more important, as performance brings long term success rather than just covering up the cracks when you get a win because of a lucky bounce. A real insight into the characters, and Robbie is good at picking up the little smirks from the players when there is more to tell and trying to prise the detail out of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing the O'Driscoll one and hope he lets his guard down as much as the others have.

Not sure what the takeup has been on these but i've really enjoyed them so far, hope they continue and aren't just limited to Copps' mates. Its obviously the Copps show but I would be interested for these to continue prior to his career to more of the iconic eras in Rovers recent history.

I've enjoyed them all but the JOC one really endeared him to me.
Not really heard him speak before (I never even realised he was a brummie tbh), but he seemed very genuine in his love of the club & gutted he had to leave for a bigger club on more money!

The little side stories are great too, the race between Leo & McIndoe, funny, think that was Greeny who brought that up.

Looking forward to hearing & digesting Sean's side of it when I get time. All in all well worth a fiver a month.

Got the JO'C one on now and found it fascinating. I'd forgotten he actually joined briefly playing for Penney and stayed right until the Experiment era. Some great insights and sounds like he got a rough deal from Saunders, and as you say you believe that he would probably have stuck with us if he'd been respected more at that time.

Was also interesting how the players have these intense relationships with other players and friendships that just disappear. Gives a real insight into footballers lives and good comparison from Copps relating it to a getting divorced.

Would love to hear from Pricey on there, and I'm sure RO'K would be good value. I never really rated Gareth Roberts too highly but its interesting that most single him out for praise. I almost find the stories of how bad it was under Saunders in yr1 as interesting as the success under SO'D, but then to be fair to him the side he built got us back to the Championship at first time of asking. Perhaps those that joined Billy Paynter, Rob Jones, Cotterill etc who only saw the success would have another view of him entirely.

Agree totally Spud.

I've enjoyed all of them very much, but the JOC one which I watched after the Blackburn game on Saturday is probably my favourite, for all the reasons you stated.

Reading these reminded me that I still hadn't listened to the JOC one.  Remedied that now and I have to say what a great interview it was.  I always liked Jimmy as a player and assumed he moved on for financial reasons as part of the fire sale following relegation.  It was good to hear his side and such a shame he was treated so disrespectfully yet despite that he was still reluctant to leave.  What a top bloke he appears to be and he clearly still has a lot of affection for our club .

I'm a bit confused with the pricing. Is it £5 per month or £5 per interview?

Fiver a month, I think you'll have access to all the casts so far whenever you subscribe.

£5 per month. Well worth it in my opinion.

Yes I've just paid a fiver and got access to the first 5. They seem to come out every fortnight (SOD part 2 is out on Friday). I guess you could wait until they are all available and sign up to binge them all but that seems a bit mean spirited in the current climate.

Listened to SODs second one yesterday. Would be interesting to have known how we would have done if we went down the route he wanted to take in the Championship and sold Sharp when we got the offer above his eventual release clause and sold Copps too then reinvested that money. Instead JR was giving those players bumper new contracts to keep them their and leaving us with scraps to sign.

That's when our wage bill started getting out of hand, and quite a few of those earners, and fans favourites were spending an increasing amount of time on the treatment table. My assumption at the time was it was SO'D who was being loyal to his players.

The other thing was losing Mills and Wellens so JR was very aware of the backlash should other players 'be allowed to leave'. Yes, nothing changes.

Fans can be objective when you discuss selling on players for a profit, until it comes to the actual selling of them, then the teddies come out of the pram 'Always selling our best players for peanuts' etc, etc. Same with SO'D himself with prospects of him being headhunted by other clubs notably Burnley.

Some people look at that time through rose tinted glasses and use it as a stick to beat the current board with, yet things are no different when it comes to the reality of football, being able to deal with disappointment of players and managers leaving etc.

We were always going to be up against it being a smaller fish in a bigger pond but despite all the trials and tribulations we were relegated twice by the skin of our teeth.

Whether things could have been different if SO'D had got his way, who knows, but it doesn't change the fact we were very successful through that period and beyond and I'm very grateful for that.

How much did Ipswich offer for Copps? I thought it was around £200k? Sounded from the interview that it was an offer we shouldn't have turned down.
Also, it seems he was never consulted on the experiment & given a chance to manage it himself, just got told to clear his desk
Was a sad way to end a great era but I wouldn't change where we are now.

It must've been a lot more than 200k, surely? Absolute pittance that, especially compared to our other top players of the day who went for 7 figures.

The way Sean spoke it must have been more but I'm sure it was reported at the time around 200 or 250k.

£200k I think. The offer was a combined £2.5m for both, iirc.

That's the way I remember it Janso, SOD spoke like it was too good to refuse for a 30 odd year old & that it was money we could have strengthened & gone again with. I remember thinking it was a piss take offer at the time.
