Made me laugh
« on January 20, 2021, 08:00:56 pm by ridgewoodrover »
Just had a gander on a West Ham board about the game Saturday, normal stuff about what team they should put out .
There’s a bit of a thread about famous people from our fair town.
Some comic remarked they’d all left as soon as they could.
Claimed he’d had to work in Donny for three months and it’s a dump.
Now I’ve had a few weeks in Basildon, all I’ll say is it makes Rotherham look half decent,.
We do have a bit of a negative reputation though. :scarf:

I’ve worked and stayed in West Ham, actually slept at Upton Park as they turned the directors boxes into hotel rooms on non match days, it’s an absolute dump and unsafe after dark as is Stratford where the Olympic Stadium is.

I've stayed in Stratford. It's like Hexthorpe but on a grander scale.

One thread they’ve got going has decided that they will play highs balls as our centre backs don’t look good in the air. I’m sure brick wall is terrified that Yarmolenko or Bowen are going to win headers against him!

Aye, it's nearer Southend. The taxi drivers moved to Ilford and the gangsters moved to Upminster. And West Ham moved to Stratford!

Stratford is a lot better than it was 20-odd years ago before they built the Olympic site.

The wife is from basildon and  I lived down there for a year during  the miners strike. TBF west ham dominate the football support there followed closely by Tottenham  then Milwall with a smattering of Arsenal.  Apart from family the most grounded people support either southend or leyton

Glyn it might look pretty where the stadium and shopping centre are but the surrounding area hasn’t improved and it’s no less dangerous

What exactly makes Stratford so dangerous? Can't say I've ever felt particularly unsafe round there

I suppose it’s because I work at night down there, I’ve had SUV’s try to run me off the road, had a gun pointed at me as well. The guys who work there regularly also state that you need to be careful after dark. Personal experience Glen, I work in the Rail Industry so not looking for trouble.

Maybe it's you DVR ;)

Fair enough though, as an individual, not in a work van or anything, I've never felt especially unsafe round there. But then I'm not carrying a load of tools that someone might fancy getting their hands on.

I think a lot of areas in London are deemed dangerous/unsafe based on long past reputations - which was why I asked. Bermondsey is another, but I live nearby and it's another area I wouldn't be especially concerned about walking through alone. God knows I've done enough of it to pass the hours in lockdown.

It might be my good looks viva, I know there are plenty of dodgy places not just in London, I’m more responding to the inference from West Ham fans about our beloved Donny compared to their stomping ground.

I was in London from 1996-2004. I lived in Bruce Grove, N19, a stone’s throw from where Keith Blakelock was hacked to death. Never had any bother. Then moved to Balham and then bought a place in Streatham. Never had any trouble at all.

Let's be honest, people are splitting hairs here. It's nothing to do with places, it's to do with culture.

Modern Britain is a sh*thole. The chavs and the druggies have taken over, and it's endemic throughout the whole country.

I used to live in Canning Town, real West Ham territory. Got beaten half to death one night for being a "fackin norvener". Lovely place.

Ok Steve. But how do you explain the riot in 1978 at The Den after an FA Cup quarter final against Ipswich? Or the blackshits in the 1930's beating up anyone they didn't fancy? There's plenty more examples down the decades too. It's got sod all to do with "chavs and druggies" if you are implying that such people are of relatively recent importance. I agree though that it is all to do with culture.  The grey beards on here will remember Alf Garnett. He sums up the exact cause.

I don't know what point you're making here Bob, because my point is that violence is everywhere, not just in London.

As regards chavs and druggies, yes I am implying that such people are of relatively recent importance, because they're everywhere. If you can't see that, you must be walking round blindfolded.

Never mind Alf Garnett either, the cause of all this is successive sh*t governments, of all political persuasions.

No, I get you. It was just the use of 'dangerous' rather than 'dodgy' that interested me.

With “this made me laugh” in mind.
There is a picture of DM on the DROS under the title of We will give it everything and he speaks of the WHU game.
Have at look at the chap next to DM in the picture.
He must be extremely well hung.

I was driving through West Ham once and stopped to ask a local where the best place was to park the car. I spent the next hour looking for "Far Corfe View" but could I eck find it.
