9 wins in 10 league matches
« on February 08, 2021, 02:35:04 pm by Dutch Uncle »
Some (BST maybe) asked how our current league run compares to others in our history.

Well, our recent run has seen us win 9 out of the last 10 league games. This has been bettered or equalled  only 5 other times in our history, and there is an overlap between 2 of those occasions:

•   1927-28, Div3N, Rovers won 9 in a row but lost the two matches either side of those 9
•   1946-47, Div3N, Rovers won the first 5 matches, lost the 6th and then won the next 6, so winning 11 out of the first 12 matches
•   1946-47, Div3N, the run of 6 wins above from matches 7-12 was followed by a draw and then four more wins for a run of 10 wins and one draw in 11 matches
•   1946-47, Div3N, we had a win of 10 consecutive wins which led into a run of winning 11 and drawing 1 of 12 matches.
•   In 2003-04 we had a run of 6 consecutive wins, followed by a loss at York and then 5 more successive wins for a run of winning 11 out of 12.

Quite a run indeed

P.S.
1) If we ignore the three games of the aborted 1939-40 season, the last 3 games of the 1938-39 season were also won, so it could be said that we had a run of winning 14 out of 15 league matches.

2) In 1976-77 we had a run of 8 wins and 2 draws out of 10 matches which equated to 18 points from 10 matches in the old 2 per win operative at the time, thus equal to 9 wins in 10.

Cheers Dutch. Great stats again.

Feels quite similar to the Penney run this although, you could argue we are amongst more illustrious opposition.

There maybe some parallels to draw too in that we acquired the services of Akinfenwa to give us that extra dimension up front for the run in and I'm sure we can all recall the 'impact' he had although, one of the Cambridge defenders may have suffered some memory loss!

I would like to hope that Bogle might have a, similar impact in keeping our goals tally ticking over by providing another weapon in DM's armoury.

Just looking back at that season, in the second half we came up to that Mansfield game on 21st Feb although it was about the 32nd game of the season, another 9 games on from where we are now. Even after that, Penney bolstered the ranks with Akinfenwa and a young David Wheater, who I think scored a vital goal or two in his loan spell. One might have been at home to Darlington on a very horrible windy day at Belle Vue.

I still think the nearest we could get to that Mansfield moment, coming up against a promotion rival, would be Portsmouth at home on 2 March. Of course there's probably more twists and turns before then so who knows.

How good was our run to turn it around in 2008-09? I always remember that as a load of wins rattled off in a row, mostly with Heffernan scoring the winning goal, but it looks like we've surpassed that this season!

Wheater played for us two seasons later, in 2005/6 season. First game 11 February 2006 vs Dingles.

I believe we signed the dangerous right flank combo of Melligan and Mulligan that season though.

Did they win opportunity knocks?

And it didn't stop there Dutch. Over 16 games, our record was W13 D1 L2. Coming straight after a run (in all competitions) of P9 W1 D6 L2, culminating in that woeful performance against Yeovil, it was an amazing turnaround and showed how O'Driscoll could find tune us.

Excellent OP by the way. Just shows how historically good our current form is. You have to treasure periods like these.

Browny was that season  first time round as were: macca, mulli, lfw, beech, bayo, mcgrath, rigoglioso, and am sure there were others.

Was Doolan also signed prior to that season starting or was he a similar arrival to Blundell time wise - a few weeks before the previous season ended?

I was in Australia that year - and it was amazing for me out there, so you guys in this country must have had an absolute of a time.

I'm pretty sure McGrath played against us in the play off final at Stoke, and then signed during pre-season, just before we signed McIndoe (for the same LW position) - and as a result he never really got a decent run in the side. Blundell was one of those 'make-sure' signings towards the end of the Conf season (and of course set up Barnes to set up Tierney if you know what I mean, with blood pouring from his head) as did Doolan. Doolan didn't really see action (in fact i thought we'd signed a dud) until we were in the League and then he totally bossed the midfield.

McGrath did indeed play for Dagenham at Stoke. He started and got subbed on 70mins.

Doolan made his debut for us in a 2-2 draw away at Woking on 22 March 2003.

He was also lucky to avoid red for handling the ball on the line when dangerous Dave scored his header.

Was the ball actually out when Tim Ryan swung the ball in for the first goal? Looked very suspect.

Not for me. Ryan was definitely out of play but his foot looked just behind the line, not enough for the whole of the ball to be over imo. I spent a lot of time poring over that grainy VHS footage as a kid like the Zapruder film.

Also questionable whether we actually scored a single goal that day as they all look to be deflected in some form...
