Car insurance

Theiving bas**rds that they are.

We've had an old second car for years. Barely used it for years. It's coming to the end of its life and as tax, test and insurance were due at the end of the month, we've given it away to a charity recycling company.

Phoned the insurance to let them know that I didn't want them automatically renewing the insurance next week. I was told they'd cancel the policy, which would cost me £50. I said in that case I'd just let it run to end of the policy next week and write to them saying I wouldn't be renewing. The very polite woman on the phone said I'd be breaking the law by having insurance on a car I didn't own and their policy was to report these cases. I either paid them £50 or I could be prosecuted.

Hastings Direct. Never use the theiving bas**rds again.

I had that with them a few months ago when i did the same as you. I argued the point to the extent that they said to just forget it and they would not charge me.
I used all of my well honed charm and persuasion tactics where as you must have got their back up  ;)

Looks like this was one Hastings battle that Billy didn't conquer.

I had similar with mortgage company recently. Finally got to pay the Mortgage off (early) and nationwide wanted to charge me £50 as an admin fee. At no point in all the years of me having a mortgage with them was this ever mentioned. In fact, one year before paying it off I took advice from  One of their mortgage advisers to inform her that we intended to pay the mortgage off. She did not mention admin fees either. A suitably worded email to their customer relations dept got it sorted though. I’d imageine there are plenty that just pay it though.

Halifax wanted to keep £1 in my mortgage account to look after the deeds, I said no, they are digital nowadays anyway at the land registry, they then said it would be easier for me to remortgage should I need to, I said no thanks I have not spent all these years paying it off to saddle myself with more debt

Thieving bas**rds, financial institutions are. Insurance companies are the worst. You shell out an often extortionate amount of money on the off chance that you have an accident and then when you need it, they do everything they can to try and find a way out of paying out.

Don’t Johnson, Sunak and Hancock have shares in Hastings?

Zero value in any insurance. It’s the biggest scam going.

You can't go without insurance on your car though.

I suppose you could call it a legalized protection racket that in some cases is compulsory to have by law.
