Is perhaps a name not many will remember but we signed him from Gateshead on 01/08/97 until he rejoined them on 18/02/98, I don’t think he played any matches unless someone can find it , but today he’s been sentenced to 11 years 10 months for the man slaughter of his father

He played a handful and I remember him scoring in the opening game of the season at Gay Meadow in a 2-1 defeat to Shrewsbury Town, a result which turned out to be one of the more respectable of that dreadful season.

I’ve just found out a bit more about his Rovers career, 4 starts, 10 sub appearances and 1 goal all in the league (Shrewsbury away as posted above )

I remember talking to a chap in the car park pre-match that day. He was asking me about the club as his son was playinig left back I think. I couldn't give him many positives and his son was subbed after about 20 minutes I think never to be seen again.
Shrewsbury away, Forest at home, Peterborough at home and then Macclesfiled away. I was shell shocked after watching those games.

Was he from the North East? I think his dad drove him to the game.

I was thinking he was the guy we got from Chester and sent back to Chester but thinking a bit harder that was Paul Carden. I remember the name Paul Conlon but can't place him.

That's an impressive memory you've got Surrey Rover!

I went to that game too, but would never have remembered who scored our goal, although I do remember Paul Conlon being at Rovers.
What I'll never forget, and the reason this fixture is etched on my memory, is the feeling of utter dread I had before the game. I just knew this was going to be an horrendous season.

I took my father-in-law to the game. He lives in Cheshire and I would take him to the occasional match, so although he's not particularly a footy fan, he's always had a passing interest in Rovers' fortunes.
I remember vividly trying to explain to him why I felt this was going to be the season from hell, but I'm sure he just thought I was being over-dramatic.
"That didn't seem too bad" he said after the match.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Has been in trouble before , in September 2013 he was given 2 suspended sentences ( for 2 years ) of 4 months each for assault on his then wife .

Football wise , after playing for Sunderland Boys he was signed by Peter Reid as an 18 year old and was thought to have a huge future in the game...how wrong that turned out to be
