Oh no. There goes a true footballing great. RIP big man.

He was pushing 35 when he left us. He went on to lead the line in another 150 matches for various clubs. An outstanding centre forward and integral to what will forever be one of my very favourite Rovers seasons.

R.I.P. Ernie.

Great memories from a your time at Rovers.
One of the best headers of a football i have seen. Ironically heading those heavy footballs may possibly have ended up causing his death.

Oh what a sad Monday.

Mick Bates also. Used to live down the road from us in the house opposite what used to be known at Dario’s.
My wife taught his kids to swim.

Great player. Had Bremner and Giles ahead of him at Leeds but was a really good replacement when needed.
Finished his career at his home town club.

R.I.P. Mick.

Ernie had been suffering for quite a while so not unexpected. So long, big man.

Big Ernie did a fantastic job for us in the 83/84 promotion winning season. His forward partnership with Duggie was fantastic. I remember a goal he scored in front of the town end where he rose up to head the ball and literally had defenders hanging from his shoulders and legs and he still out jumped them to score. He was one hell of a forward. RIP Ernie.

What a shame for him and his family, especially when they couldn’t say goodbye to him because dementia had already got to him.
I too have fond memories of him at Belle Vue.
Also I saw Mick Bates play but he seemed like one of Billy’s guest appearance  players.

Will always be one of my greatest Rovers strikers even though he wasn’t long with us - his partnership with a young Colin Douglas was phenomenal.
I recall winning our first 3 home games of that 83-84 promotion season 3-0 and one goal against Bury has always stuck in my mind: Dennis Peacock route one long ball, headed down under pressure by Ernie Moss on the edge of their box into the path of Colin Douglas to slam home - 3 touches: simple, classic, effective.

At some point after he left, in my sad little world I bas**rdised to myself some of the lyrics of “Groovy Times” by The Clash in his honour:
..”well the intake is on the uptake
And his acceleration is pretty grim -
I remember his first appearance, now look what’s happened to him -
They put him in a red n white shirt back in 1984:
He was the King Of The Season: Ernie Moss - Donny Rovers evermore!
Groovy Times
Groovy Times
Groovy Times...”

(You’ll need to know the song).

A great player and leader on the pitch.

Poor Ernie. I always remember my dad was convinced he dyed his hair, so unnaturally dark was it.  Great player.

I guess it speaks volumes that the mark he left on us in such a short time. In my mind he was with us much longer than he was.

Agreed. I remember being surprised and sad when left so abruptly after just one, very successful, season with us.
