When we were kids
« on September 01, 2021, 06:50:02 am by Upton Rover »
Them that wanted to play football joined their local village football team with their friends and gave it all they could every game, the team I was in never won a game in 2 full seasons and sad to say that them that though they were better than the team left to go play for rival villages as they were the better teams and won trophies each season. I plugged away in the same team and the winless games kept coming some games only managing to field a team of 9 and 10 player’s and some big losses followed, but we stuck together because it was our village team the one we loved to play for win, draw or lose, as the years went by we were consistent and always managed to be bottom of the league, times did get better and we all enjoyed playing every game because it was our team, and them players that never wanted to play for us just because of our league position let them jog on, Will Grigg springs to mind whatever you may think the main reason why he never came to DRFC is we are bottom of the league, and players think they deserve better. Let’s forget it and we have all got to get behind the players, the manager, the board and the Town and no matter how many seasons it takes we will come good again.

Written from the heart, but my head tells me something isn't right.

Even with all this money the board are putting in, and let's not forget the extra funds made available at the 11th hour that we haven't spent.

Why would you as an ambitious player turn down a team near the top than a team who dont create any chances.

Feel for RW.

Yes we did come good in the end managed to climb all 3 divisions in the league, and it was a good feeling to beat the teams that your mates left for years before.
The moral of my story is we got to all stick together, I have never read so many negative posts on this forum for a long time and yes I agree that we all have a right to criticism if we feel things are not right, but the only way out of this little set back is to get behind the team and that includes the players that were told they could leave the club, and if we either do manage to pull it around or if we don’t and drop a league we all have 1 thing in common we LOVE ❤️ Our club

Lovely sentiments. I used to play for Ridgewood Colts when it was first formed by Mick Haywood snd a couple of other dads in Edenthorpe.

A few years in and some new Dads got involved from the ‘new estate’ that was built at the bottom of Fieldside. They decided that some of us weren’t good enough to represent our village so they brought in new players from Cantley, Balby, Barnby Dun etc who all played for Doncaster Boys…

I was invited to come and play for Hatfield Chace (the nearest other team to me) under 15s and that first season we won nothing as Ridgewood Colts won everything. The next season we really gelled and won everything. It was a nice feeling. We were all from that Thorne Road corridor… and I got yo play with Mark Atkins who was streets ahead of everybody else…

No point to this post, just brought up some happy memories.
