Centre backs yesterday
« on November 07, 2021, 08:55:37 am by Filo »
Surprised this has not been mentioned, but when Olowu went off yesterday we had two centre backs on the bench, Williams and Blyth, but Wellens put Rowe at centre back and brought Horton on as left wing back. Now in my opinion Williams is shite, but what was the thinking  behind putting Rowe there? Has Wellens finally seen what a lot of us have seen and lost patience with Williams? Was Williams carrying a knock, and if so why was he on the bench if there was no intention to play him? I thought Rowe did well at CB by the way

Williams was injured apparently (yet still on the bench) - bizzare.

Tbf if I was manager I would've done exactly the same. It was a very important match for RW in terms of result over performance and he can trust a player with huge experience more so than a young professional starting his career to help in achieving a result. I agree that by not bringing Williams on sends a clear message to him ie. Improve quickly or you will not be playing.

Rowe and Horton played well. Probably the only positives in the game.

Agreed, I think it was Horton that made the run resulting in the corner that produced the goal

Hopefully Horton will get more chances at Left Back , freeing up Tommy Rowe to play in midfield which is his preferred and better position

Not seen any of the game yesterday but I'm glad Horton played well. Hope he can take confidence in this. Be a few folk on here scranning humble pie if he does after they referred to him as being shite.

Williams could have been recovering from an illness rather than an injury. He was throwing up on the pitch just before the end of the Crewe game.

Injury or illness, why put him on the bench if he’s not going to be used

Aye, and there's very little to form that opinion on, same happened with Jones after he was our best player from March onwards. Had a bad pre-season now he's seen as shite.

I’m sure that I saw something either on here or Twitter last night saying that RW was going to put Williams on and tried twice and he still wasn’t ready, so he put Blyth on instead and was very displeased with Williams.
Can’t find the tweet or post now?

Horton seemed to have got vilified after a bad performance against Rotherham, in fairness he was left pretty isolated and up against a decent player (Sadlier)
Horton had a really good game yesterday and put some decent crosses in. Hopefully he now gets more chances

Williams' ankle swelled up last Saturday, he was just on the bench incase desperate.

In our situation it’s about Risk. Horton playing in league could deemed a Risk by Richie in different situation he might be given more time.

He should get in on Tuesday we will have a depleted squad.

I would say that Jones,  Horton,  Hasani and Blythe would be first names on the teamsheet on Tuesday. You need to keep these lads sharp in case they are needed for League games.

On the radio they said it was something to do with having to have a certain amount of players in the fa cup squad to the previous league one. Not sure on the rules but they knew he was injured and would not play him.

Williams must’ve been ill or injured like you say. Wellens must not trust Blythe yet. Rowe is a good all round pro, can play anywhere, think it helped Horton having him next to him. Horton looked really good going forward yesterday, his delivery was good, think he needs to strengthen up to defend against the type of athlete we’ll face in League 1.

Not sure if Ravenhill can play in that game aswell?

I would say Knoyle Anderson Rowe Smith Dodoo Hiwula and Vilca could and should play add to them Jones Blythe Horton Hasani or Ravenhill and and bench with Bottomley and 5 U18s

think it would help Horton at left back if Rowe played infront of him to give him abit of cover

Thought Rowe was excellent at centre back yesterday. Some of his distribution was a bit agricultural but then he was playing as a centre back.
His experience showed.
Think we maybe should give him a go at centre forward.
Is our top scorer playing from left back so he might get a few as a striker.

He may play in more positions than Paul Madeley played in for Leeds the he is going. Bet he is not so bad in goal either.

We need to get TR playing in midfield and give Horton a run at left back.
Without Ben Close we need TR creativity.
