Coins!!!!! they are taking the piss I quite often have 5 6 7 quids worth of shrapnel in my pocket. Not that i'm planning to go to Sunderland but that is taking the piss. Could prove to be an interesting argument being "forced" to donate

Surely taking money off people is against your human rights or is that being put on the bonfire of EU red-tape that everyone's cheering for without knowing what it's about. I personally don't like using digital currency. I'd not go rather than have some stupid mackem try rob me.

They're doing it because some idiots throw coins into the home fans sections.

This wouldn't happen but for a few mindless morons spoiling it for every one.  What does need to happen, is for this to be publicised so that away fans leave coins at home or in the car - that way no one is being "robbed" nor forced to donate to charity.

It's a bit like some clubs where away fans have to have pop bottle tops removed.  I get round that by having a spare in my back pocket.  Mind you, I'm not a mindless moron who would use a full bottle as a missile, I want to drink the f**ker especially at the prices clubs charge!

Piss poor reactionary stuff. They should be applying the same to home fans too!

Once again punishing the majority due to a minority. Football 'policing' is going backwards. If you treat people like sh*t, they will behave like sh*t.

Think about where Sunderland is geographically. Most away fans will have to travel a long way, potentially by public transport. Are you telling me you think it is OK for them to be forced not to carry cash all day? (or effectively have to only buy anything in multiples of £5). Paying by card should be a choice, not a requirement.

I’m guessing that the food and drink kiosks at Sunderland are card payments only then.
If not, is everything priced in multiples of £5

MK dons don’t accept cash at their kiosks.

I’m not saying it’s ok, just the blame lies with the mindless morons, not Sunderland.

This won't stop those mindless morons, this will move their behaviour elsewhere than at Sunderland.  Indeed, the mindless morons bringing about this move already carried out their behaviour at Sunderland so its the other, vast majority of non-mindless morons who will suffer.

And mark my words, if this is seen to work for the authorities at Sunderland, it will be used at other grounds despite and regardless of the effect on or the wishes of away supporters.

There will be other and more acceptable ways to deal with this issue and the supporters groups at Sunderland who seem happy to accept this particular ruling, since it does not affect home support, should be aware of what they may have set in motion.

are they going to go through people's wallets? Most wallets have a coin section - surely they can't do that?

Surely you can demand a receipt and the right of return at the end of the game, or it is classed as robbery.
The thing to do then is lots to have a nominal amount of say ten pence in coins and make it cost the club to administer, it would soon die a death.
It would be heavy to cart about as well.

About 25 years ago, on a freezing cold day in early February, I went to watch then 4th tier Inverness play a non league side in the Scottish cup.  To my surprise the game was on despite the weather, and I was glad of my flask of tea I had with me.

But yes, the jobsworth steward decided that I couldn’t take this into the ground as it could be used as a “missile”.  Beggaring belief I returned said flask to my car, contemplating as I did, that I held a potent weapon in my hand ie my car key - which could give someone a serious eye injury.

Of course I intended neither, but needless to say common sense didn’t prevail.

If it is applied elsewhere Sheff Wednesday's crowd will go down by 3 or 4 thousand, their home fans are the worst for that sort of rubbish.

You shouldn't have bent down so fast when you dropped it!

On a more serious note, I have a "coin" (not actual currency) that the missus brought back from South Africa for me. I frequently make inconsequential decisions on a coin toss (e.g. do I want a muffin or a donut/do I fancy Chinese or Indian for a takeaway etc.). I have carried this coin wit me everywhere for a few years and I'd be very unhappy if someone at a match tries to take it off me. I guess I could place a high value on it and ask for a receipt but it would still be a right pain in the arse.

I had a similar disagreement at Crewe a couple of weeks ago. They removed the top from a bottle of water that I purchased - I asked why and was told it was FA regulations, I asked which regulations to then be told it’s Crewe’s rule.
I was having a bit of craic with one of the stewards and asked him about the bottle top issue. Agreed that you can throw a bottle further with the top on, however he couldn’t really answer why the cup of tea I had bought at the same time as the water came with a lid - the Sunderland scenario takes it to a whole new level
