My abiding memory of long priced winners is actually a nightmare.
I think it was at the Leger meeting and I was asked by my then girlfriend to put a fiver on 'Catch the Cat' as her cat had given her the runaround that morning when she tried to get it in.
Come the race, 'Catch the Cat' was 66/1 and drawn in stall 2. All meeting the winners were coming from horses drawn in high stalls. There were 20+ horses in the race.
You all know what's coming don't you?
Yes, I made the executive decision to trouser the cash to offset my losses.
The chuffing thing got up to win on the line.
That was not the best feeling I've ever had at the races!!
As a scoundrel, my faint hope was that she'd not know where to see the results and I'd be able to bluff my way out. Unfortunately, 2 mins after the race I had a text saying 'I've won, I've won.

What's your best/worst gambling experience?

 It was the FA cup 2nd round games on the Sunday afternoon about 6 years ago or so .

I looked at the non league v EFL games with the non league teams at home .

All the games looked pretty tight to me , at least on paper .

I picked 6 draws out of them and they all came in .

Paid £2,200 and just before Xmas too .

I couldn't believe it .

Not had anything near since , not a cracker .

My worst- Ben Nevis in 1980. I fancied him to win that year's Grand National but I was put off when I saw him jump badly at Warwick. Needless to say he won the National at 40-1, and I wasn't best pleased.

Stag do at York, I know nothing of the gee gees.  Fiver a race, picking names I liked  won 6 of the 8 and one of the 2 I picked winner but bet on something else as was short odds. Paid for full day and night, hotel and breakfast for lads morning after and came home with more than I went with.  Never come close to that since

Worst is a mate has a horse , he used to put on Facebook when it was running,  reckon it won 7 from 10,  as an occasional gambler I picked the 3

Why on a cold early January afternoon would people be betting on 125-1 shots ?

Been watching the racing today mug.
That 100/1 winner had only run 3 times and started at 2/1fav on its debut finishing 2nd. Admittedly that was a 2 mile bumper but today's race was a shocker which took no winning.
Didn't have a bet but ith hindsight, no way should it have been that price.

.... and as a lifelong racing fan I've loads of hard luck stories, but I'll recount the latest.
Royal Ascot this year, 3x£5 doubles, £5 treble.
I was doing a gala for the council so was unable to watch the racing.
Mid aft I thought to missen 'wonder how me bet is going'
Big mistake. Got me phone out and saw that the first two won at decent prices.
So I was offered a cash out of about £250. Or let the bet run and win about £1500.
The last race was a 28 runner handicap so I cashed out.
Needless to say the horse won.

I think the reason it was 125/1 was cos no one backed it

I worked with a lad who claims that when Liverpool came back from 3 down to win the champions league he was away on a golfing trip with a big group and they were all well and truly bladdered. At half time someone suggested that they all chuck a fiver each in and they put a bet on Liverpool to win on penalties
I can’t remember how much he said they won but it was substantial

Before I retired, every year on the Tuesday of the Cheltenham Festival a group of us took the afternoon off work and went to a pub in Ormskirk to watch the racing and to place bets at the bookies which was opposite the pub. It was somewhat of a ritual and the landlord used to lay on sandwiches for free - well we did consume rather a lot of alcohol 
 
One year, one of the guys backed the winner in the first six races, and was, as you'd expect, cockahoop about it. Well, until one of the other guys asked him if he'd done the PlacePot or Jackpot too and when he said he'd only done single Each Way's pointed out just how much he would have won if he had.
 
I've never seen someones face drop so quickly. He went from  to  in less than a second.
 
Best I've ever done was four wins and two seconds.  I did do the PlacePot though, which was nice.

The strangest experience I had was about 20 years ago - we were over from Holland and I took my wife for a day at the Donny races. In one of the races I bet on a horse, it won, and I still lost money 

How did that happen? Well it was 4-5 on favourite and it won in a dead heat. They way they calculated it was that they would normally give me 9 pounds back for my fiver, but since it was a dead heat I got only half of that - i.e. £4.50
