I am a member of RMT and as I work on the railway people from the outside might not realise that the railway relies on overtime to keep it covered as they don't run it with enough staff so rely on overtime to keep it covered.

It was suggested by Grant Shapps that they would ban overtime of the railway.

All I would say is if they do 'Good luck with that' because if staff decided to just work their booked shifts then the railway would grind to a halt.

And GS quoted on an article that he could not understand why working on rest days was 'Voluntary' https://martinwicks.org/2022/08/04/rest-days-are-for-rest-mr-shapps/

Perhaps this is the way forward for this dispute, rtid91 - Just implement an overtime ban.  Everybody continues working their allocated shifts and watch the railway grind to a halt.
Exactly, people in the public who don't work in the respective industries I don't have this attitude where I say oh well how would you know, you don't work in the industry. If people went to the picket lines and asked people exactly what is happening they would better understand.

I would say nearly all the public services are understaffed and pay and conditions, the latter which doesn't get mentioned is how you not only recruit but retain staff.

If there is something better out there for someone with better pay and conditions more than likely people will opt for that, and who can blame them.

The general public are very easily misled by the mainstream media and the newspapers i.e. daily mail, the sun etc

So it would seem that for all the noise and bluster the NWR employees have had enough of not getting paid and have finally excepted the pay offer that has been on the table for many weeks.

I know people who work for NWR and they are angry about the way the union has dragged out this dispute which has resulted in them loosing MORE money than they will receive for the pay offer and back pay. Is this a sensible way to deal with collective bargaining when you loose your members more than they gain?

It will be interesting to see what sort of level of membership the union still has in the next few months, if my un scientific talks with union members is anywhere near then i'm thinking it wont look good for continued membership.

Remember, TSSA settled for basically the same deal, bar a few job specific details, months ago.
