Agents

If it’s true and it seems that it is based on the evidence, that the board are reluctant to pay agents fees. Then as a football club with hopefully aspirations of climbing the football pyramid we are at a considerable disadvantage v most of our competitors.

While I agree with the sentiment of not wishing to pay fees to a third party when acquiring new players it does mean agents will not recommend this football club to their clients.
We will nearly always miss out on signing the very best of available targets in the transfer market.

This seriously concerning and i suggest it is something that needs looking at by the hierarchy.
Can Copps have some influence on changing this current policy?

Reo Griffiths agent takes a fairly hefty whack you'd think, so maybe the policy had already shifted?

I think it was the club wanted to only pay proportionate agent fees rather than the stupid ones. Think I saw a list of what clubs spent on agents a few years back and we were near the bottom in L1.

Probably partly why we preferred loan players so heavily for a while as you don’t pay agents fees

This is nothing new. It's always been an issue even going back during JRs reign and it's more about the level of fee rather than fees themselves plus the way certain agents operate. It's just common sense that any club of our size should be reluctant to pay disproportionate fees.

Let's not be making out this is a new thing.  It's been discussed on here several times over the years.

Agents work for a player. He is the one that uses them to get the best deal for himself. The player should pay the fee.

That's what happens in many other situations.

It’s not exactly the same, but with every experience I’ve had with a recruitment agent (both being placed myself and hiring candidates that have been recommended) the hiring company has paid the agency fee. I guess with films, tv etc the agent takes a cut of the actor’s/actress’ pay, though.

Yes, you're right, Nick, with that last sentence. When I worked in that industry, every agency I went with took 20% of the fee. That was a big chunk of what we earned, because believe me, only the superstars get megabucks in that game.

Copps playing agent was CAAStellar. We don’t have a single one of their players. And they have over 750 on their books.

I accept that a company wanting to recruit and uses an agency who works on THEIR behalf, pays the agency fee. Its usually a one off and the fee is a either a fixed cost or a percentage of the recruits salary. However we are here in the same situation as the acting industry where the actor uses an agent to find him work. Its the agents that put their players about to find them jobs.

There are nuances as the clubs need players, but the agent is with the player throughout his career getting him jobs at several clubs. If agents don't move players on, they don't get their fees.

I still believe that all agent fees should come from the players salary.
