Gillingham first away day for daughter
« on April 22, 2024, 11:52:59 pm by Ryaldinhio »
Ladies/Gents,
Potentially taking my daughter for her first away day, 11yr old. Ive been a donny fan from being her age, we are west stand ST holders but every away day I've ever been to (lots years ago) has been for a piss up. Obviously things have changed now so this is something new to me! Wondering what's best bet when taking a young one? Is there lads that go in cars or best to get on supporters coach from ground etc?

If (WHEN) we go wembley we will be jumping train but wasn't sure what was best for this game.

Any help welcome
Thanks
Ryan

I don’t go to many these days being an exile but the bus is always a decent trip. Long haul to Gillingham by car as well. The buses could well be full though with all of the interest being shown.

I’ve taken my boys for years from being 5 or 6 years old. My youngest lad now ten is a fair weather fan but my 13 year old comes to every game. We have done at least 18 away games this season and will be at Colchester and Gillingham.
I drive - partly for flexibility but also I sometimes find it cheaper than the coach as I would have to pay for the boys as well
Quality time spent together in the car.

I’ve always educated them as to what to look out for at away games to keep themselves safe.

Going for beer with your mates is good but watching rovers with your kids is priceless. I hope she enjoys it

Exactly the same as me Scooter. I quite like the drive as it adds to the adventure and like you say, quality time with my lad.
My oldest lad only goes to the bigger games when he can but my younger son (16) goes a lot, even when I can't make it he still goes to the home games.

Unless it’s too expensive, perhaps the train is an option?  I would normally drive although there’s where to park to consider.

This could be quite a tense game and atmosphere, so driving yourselves may be the best option as you’ll have a sanctuary (your car) for your daughter to reach fairly quickly.

My tip nothing to do with logistics

Make a record for her. Photos Programme Team Sheet and add Score scorers attendance etc

So easy to do these days , but seeing my first game in 57 or 58 ( see I don't even know the year ) with my Dad nothing was ever recorded and I wish I knew

My first awayday was v Chesterfield in about 61 or 2. I went with my Dad and Colin Watson from Stainforth.

No motorways and we stopped for a tea at what is now Blyth Services . Of the game I remember nothing other than Saltergate

So when my Nephew's and their kids started coming I made sure I made a "dossier" for them  as it may be important

Kicking myself I didn't keep a record myself so I recommend it to anyone

That's great advice. Back in the day I used to have a scrapbook to record all the games, match reports, league tables and photos from the press. If only we'd had camera phones back then.

Might be a good idea to task them with learning something about the team and town we're playing and a bit of the history, what the towns famous for etc?

Was Colin Watson a massive Leeds Fan?

My 13 year old has done 40/92 watching rovers. I have taken a picture of him at every ground (much to his annoyance). I intend to create a book of all the pictures for his 18th birthday. Hopefully have a lot more grounds by then

Wish I'd thought of that, Scooter. My 13 year old hasn't done that many but it would've been nice to ave a pic from each of them. It's definitely a bit of a different awayday experience versus going on the train and getting steaming drunk but it's brilliant to see him enjoying it.

My son is now 29 and we’ve been on this bloody rovers journey as a duo for as long as I can remember. He’s been to Wembley, Cardiff etc

It’s just the most amazing way to bond. Shared lows and highs.

You’ll have a wonderful time together however you choose to travel.
