Does anyone remember a game from 1998......
« on April 17, 2010, 12:48:26 pm by Keith Myath »
I'm trying to find details of a home game from what i believe to be in the 98/99 Conference season. We had Neville Southall in goal and im sure we won one nil, with the opposition keeper being sent off, does anyone know the game and could you give me any further details? i.e. the date, the opposition etc

Cheers

Southall didn't play that many games for us so that certainly narrows it down a bit but I can't find one where the opposition keeper was sent off.

The first 2 home games of that season were a midweek game v Southport, where we lost 1-0 and had Shaun Goodwin sent off, and then maybe the game you're thinking of v Kidderminster which was Rovers's first win in the Conference.

The Kidderminster game Rovers won 1-0 with a Goodwin penalty and Kiddy had their full back Webb sent off just before half time, the date was Sat 22nd August and the Rovers team that day was:

N Southall
S Shaw
K McIntyre
I Snodin
M Hume
C Sutherland
J Minett
S Goodwin
D Maamria
T Wright
S Maxfield

Subs

L Warren
G Kirkwood
D Beckett

Attendance 3,222

Mark Yates and John Deakin were in the Kidderminster team that day too.

Hope this helps.

Another more memorable game involving Southall and a sending off was away at Southport a few weeks later.
Rovers were 2-0 up but ended up loosing 3-2, with Ian Snodin being sent off for dissent just as his brother Glynn was coming on as a sub for Southall. 'Big Nev' had been injured earlier in the game and had decided he couldn't carry on after Southports 3rd goal.
Southport were a real bogey team for us in the Conference.

In that Southport game, Darren Brookes replaced Southall in between the sticks.

Thats the one vs Kidderminster, cheers mate

That was my first proper game at the Rovers, always nice to remember what was your first game, oddly had forgotten it till something jogged my memory, I think the lure of Southall my hero as a lad made me go more than anything, Sadly he was a shadow of his former self, but although a terrible game it sowed the seed for me following Rovers ever since.

I just need a program now!

Thanks again

The Kiddimindter game seemed to be a real scalp as they were tipped to challenge that season. Does anyone remember the Kettering Town game, the home game after? I remember clear as day - Kirkwood clearly kicking the ball out of the Keeper's hands and rolling it in to an empty net.

Those were the days my friends.

You're right Nathan, although Glynn came on for Southall he didn't actually go in goal as he's a bit of a shortarse. The substitution happened just as Ian was being sent off and I remember feeling cheated of seeing both Snodins playing together again for the Rovers.

Keith, try the supporters club shop, it's the community changing rooms entrance at the North West end of the ground. They've got loads of old programmes in there, good luck.

That's correct. I remember the game well and being truly appalled by the performance of the referee- a Mr Pollock who can still be seen running the line in the Premier League.

It was a shame, though, that Glynn didn't go in goal (even though he would have been hopelessly miscast for the role!). He could have then declared: \"I AM my brother's 'keeper!\"

Aye, Southport and Northwich Vics seemed to be bogey sides in those days. I remember speaking to my mate during the season we got promoted back into the league saying to him that we'd get up that year because neither of these two had beaten us that season! I may be wrong, but I'm pretty certain that was the case!

Whilst I recall us hammering Southport in that season, didn't we lose 2-1 at home to a Gregg Blundell-inspired Northwich that year?

I thought that possibly too, but am still unsure - someone will remember accurately! Maybe it was the fact that we beat them both away(?) I dunno! (bloody senility! Ha!)
