Scunny at it again.
« on May 25, 2010, 06:24:40 pm by DMnumber4 »
It got said the other day:

We need to find out how Scunny unearth these promising strikers they do it time and again. Put us to shame in that department.

Today they've signed young Bobby Grant from Accrington, only 19 years old. Not that tall, saw him a couple of times last season and he scored in their 5-3 win over Crewe which I saw.

Why can't we sign these? What's happened to Rooney's younger brother?

Id say he's a big gamble for Scunny.

Id be slighty worried if we were signing the likes of Grant to be honest.

I think Scunny take the chance with unproven players and their scouts are no better than anyonelses otherwise bigger clubs would have snapped up their scouts as that is the way of the world.

Its all good when it comes off and an unproven striker turns into a gem, but can clubs like us take the risk? There's less expectation at Scxunthorpe, so I think this allows them to take a risk and try unproven players.

Less expectation? I don't think we are such a million miles away from being like Scunny, getting \"big club\" syndrome here? I don't expect the big name signings from Rovers, but I know that they will be playing a better standard of football than they ever have in their football lives before after a few months with SOD. If we choose to get a lg.2 player instead of Billy I won't be moaning.

Scunny fans expect to be a yoyo club from league one. We on the other hand, expect to be around the playoffs now.

I think our expectation is much greater. If we played someone not known then our fans would go mad, whereas Scunny fans have come more accustomed to  it, and they know that's how their club ticks. I.e unearth a gem and flog to the highest bidder.

Dean Shiels was on everybody's lips as a striker/midfielder then? How about Stock? Mills? Roberts? Chambers? I could go on but I will hold my hands up for being ignorant, I had absolutely no idea about these players before Rovers declared interest/signed them. If we play someone not known to our fans we would be paying a fortune for our squad and shedloads for wages. We do exactly the same as Scunny, we look around for cheap players and then get them to be better. If you look at the expectations fo people on here, a small part of our fanbase, then for the last two seasons the phrase,\"If we end up fourth from bottom then I will be happy\" is quite a common one. I don't expect Rovers to be pushing for promotion next season, or playoffs, I do expect them to do their best, and if that means we have another season like the last I will be very happy!

We have moved on now. I think since we went on that great run, in the second half of last year, that coupled with the season just gone, most are now expecting big things.

And I knew loads about Sheils. And the other players you mentioned were bought in league one. I think threes alot of expectation brewing up with Rovers fans.

I can't imagine that many beyond a minority of Rovers fans seriously expect us to be pushing for the play offs. If you look at the size of the majority of the clubs in the Championship and the money they spend, then we are clearly punching above our weight. Things are only going to get tougher next season because the teams coming up from league 1 will be stronger than the teams that went down.

For me (and I imagine the majority of Rovers fans) I can see us coming anywhere between 6 - relegation next season. I suppose this uncertainty is what makes this league exciting, but I will personally take anything above the bottom 3. I think people that expect us to be challenging for the play offs are getting a bit carried away because of 2 seasons of mid-table in this division.

Then how do you explain a drop in season tickets sales? Surely if people were expecting big things we would have seen higher sales not lower? And to my mind the general mood on this board is doom and gloom over not being able to afford this, that & the other player rather then 'promotion here we come'.

After nearly 40 years supporting Rovers I have leant never to expect anything, but another year in this division would do me fine thanks.

People have got me wrong here. People expect bigger signings that's why we cant do what Scunny do.

I will explain later, very busy at the mo, but people expect and that goes both ways, if you don't sign then lower st sales etc.

For me to get my point across will take more than quick responses, sorry.

Getting these lower league players to perform 2 leagues above is difficult. For me Ward from Chesterfield was a good pick but he has been injured.

Count me out of that mate. I'm chuffed to bits at where we are and I'm amazed we are still there and improving. I'm under no illusion that this cannot go on forever and each season is a blessing.

I think our expectation is much greater.(and this is what causes the disappointment by some) If we played someone not known then our fans would go mad(I don't buy that), whereas Scunny fans have come more accustomed to  it, and they know that's how their club ticks. Maybe different managers/scouts have different talents and thats where Scunnys lie. Under SOD we've done exceptionally well for defenders (I know there were a couple of dodgy loans in L1) whereas Scunny paid £300k for that donkey from Hibs.
