25 August 1984, Preston (A)

Just looked the date up of this as i thought i recalled going away to Preston once before for the first game of the season.

We lost on the day and we were seated along the side of the ground in a rolled tip tin shack of a stand if my memory serves me right.

Hoping for a very different result this time round and think we're more than capable.

Can anyone else remember being there that day?

Yes I do, we lost 2-0 but were by far the better side on the day and felt Preston would finish well below us in the table. Thats how it turned out come the end of the season (Preston were relegated) but if Alan Brown hadn't got injured we would I believe have got promoted to the old second division that season.

Was a league game, I was there.  I remember Tony Brown having a beige suit on during the pre-match pitch inspection, not the regular Rovers blue, 'cos he was still on loan from Leeds!  Was back in the days of the old corrugated iron curved roof stand, before the ground was developed.  Played well, disappointing result.

Your memory beats mine Surrey, i'd thought we lost 3 nil on the day but you're right from the records i found it was 2 - 0. I can't remember a deal about it other than my Dad moaning like chuff all the way home that it was the last time he was going away to watch that sh!t. He's a season ticket holder at Hillsborough these days - funny how things turn out cos he watches it every week at home now!!

I've been thinking about that match - we'd just been promoted from the old 4th division and George Berry was in central defence on loan. Seemed like a big deal to me at the time!

I remember being there that day, and it was a red letter only for the fact that it was the last time I paid to get in via the kids turnstile.
Not bad considering I was 22
